What's wrong with an old-school flybarless setup like I just put together today?:

This works great, I flew it all around and confidence feels fine, solid control. Maybe this is a flybarless newb question, but at this point, just having flown my first flybarless setup, what's up with all these gyros and complex electronics everyone seems to be using these days to go flybarless??

There is nothing wrong with it. I have a similar design with yours on my 2bladed flybarless TRex 450.

The reason u see people mention about VBar, CSM and etc is because it is more design for 3D stunts instead.

If u like me are more toward scale, then u do not need all those VBar,CSM thingy. Just a normal configuration will do.

In bigger heli, I believe it is due to the weight of the blades itself, couple with high ratio of rotor disc over swash plate diameter, u can actually fly without gyro assist. Of course it is no harm to add gyros for further stability...especially during windy condition. In smaller heli like 450 sizes, to have 2 bladed flybarless without gyro assist is quite difficult to fly. U need either or both gyro and weighted blades.

This guy told me today in this video from a few months ago he was flying in 20 mph gusts. This is a GMP flybarless legend...the same kind of 20 year old heli that the rotorhead I am using. No gyros or other electronics on the swash, and he said it flew great in the winds. This heli was considered one of the top 3D machines back in the late 80's / early 90's....take a look:

I bet if you put a V Bar, CSM or what ever is currently avilable on that bad boy that it would be a pleasure to fly for anyone. I love the way that head is made.

Richard: I literally just set the swash to where it goes at center stick, then made a set of 2 exactly equal pushrods from the swash to the mixer arms to put the the grips at approx 0 pitch. I just eye-balled it. The pushrods from the mixer arms to the bladegrips were already done by the previous owner. So, what we have is simply zero pitch give or take at mid stick. I lined the washout assembly (swash driver) up with the mixer arms, but other than that, I have no idea about phase angle! But bottom line, tracking was perfect from the get-go and after a slight expo adjustment, it flies great!

On a 2 blade setup you don't need a Phase angle. Pretty much just changing out the head and adding a swash driver.
