What are some pointers for flying backwards inverted. I have been flying upright backwards for a while, I can do figure eights, loops, cuban eights. I can fly inverted backwards in a straight line, but the turns are pretty tough. I have managed to do a couple of 180 degree turns but I lose it after that.
Any input would be great.

The short answer, and at the expense of stating the obvious, is practice. That's the long answer also.

There's only two ways to make a coordinated turn for the basic four flight modes:

Right-side-up-forward & Inverted-backward:rudder and side cyclic sticks in same direction with aft cyclic.

Right-side-up-backward & Inverted forward:rudder and side cyclic sticks in opposite direction with forward cyclic.

Practice up high. When dissoriented, do a coordinated turn to get reoriented.

After a while, it just comes natural.

At what kind of speed should I try them at? Also it seems to take a lot of aft cyclic once the turn starts.

It has been a while since I learned IB, but here is what I remember. Try to keep it at a medium slow speed. Don't freak out if it starts going fast. If it starts going fast, try to get back to your medium slow speed asap. If it stops in flight, bump a little forward cyclic to get her going again.

Remember, aileron orientation is the same right-side-up or upside-down.

It sounds like your heli might be tail heavy if you need a lot of aft cyclic to turn IB. I balance my helis with a 1/2 tank of fuel. I pick the heli up by the main rotor hub and hold the mainshaft parallel to the floor. My helis all balance on the mainshaft. A tail-heavy heli that is trimmed right-side-up will want to go into backwards inverted at increasing speed with the cyclic at neutral.

I used the simulator quite a bit to practice inverted backwards before I tried it for real.

Thanks for the info. I will check the cg. I have been going too fast, next time I will try it slower.
