Blitz Helicopters Avro 90 > Got my new Avro over the weekend

The first shipment of US distributed kits and parts made it to the US on Friday so I went by and picked mine up. I had a chance to go thru my kit and I am more than impressed. EVERYTHING including the packing material is top notch (Blitz even has packing tape with its own name on it). This is the highest quality and most complete model helicopter product I have owned.

The canopy is a work of art and looks really good in person. The glass work yields a canopy that is stiff yet light, and the edges are rolled giving the canopy a classy look that matches the high quality of the mechanics (grommets holes are precut and are reinforced -see pics). Even the manual comes binded not burned on a CD

I have not opened the parts bags yet but I am impressed by just looking at them. It looks like all the parts are in a bag to complete the step listed in that part of the manual so assembly will be very straight forward (no waisting time looking for that screw that got opened up 4 or 5 bags ago). The clutch and clutch bell are huge and the machine work on all of the metal parts is impressive. You can tell just by looking at the kit that the team at Blitz takes pride in their work, and has offered a product that is very high in quality.

I am excited to get it built and flying. Below are some pics of the kit, and the nice box it comes in...

Given that this is Dave Fisher's baby, I'd expect no less than excellence.

Looks very nice.

I also picked mine up Friday and already have the motor installed and working on tall boom and head. The instruction go along with the parts that are sealed in sectional bags that are numbered so you open a part and the next bag down has the screws, nuts and so on to go with that part of the build makes it go together smooth. And the parts are off the chain I think that’s what’s slowing me down just looking at how cool every thing is. The drive train has no slop I can run it with no back slash on any of the gears and it still runs way smooth I did put just a little in there but not much and there is not a tight or loss spot any ware. If any one is building one post any issues to look for or tips for the build and set up. I personally did not lock tight any of the screws on the frame just set them hand tight till every thing was in and I could set it square on the table to make sure every thing was lined up set my gear mesh then pulled them one by one locked tight them and marked them so I would know what ones I had done. Well I’m off to my dungeon as my wife would say to drop the tall boom in work on the head and set up some servo’s I cant wait to see how the servo top holders work I have some jr 8717 so they should work great.

I’m hoping to fly it next weekend and with how fast the build is going it should not be a problem sure hope the canopy is ready by then I want to can get it dialed in for Vegas Baby. I spent about 3 more hours on it tonight and it’s ready for electronics. I will post some photos as soon as I get the boom done.

Build tips

I found you need a bit of patience with the fan clearance

Set the phasing ring so with the flybar in line with the boom, the swash balls line up with the elevator lever. When you fly it if you have any interaction problems then adjust the phasing ring as per the link below.

Good link for tips http://www.real-kbase.co.uk/arvo.html

Enjoy the build

It flies real nice

I’m a very aggressive flyer I’m going to push as much collective as I can hard tic tocs, inverted pull outs tight loops and rolls so I’m going with the all out 3d set up leading edge control, AV-24-1083D optional 3D inserts 90/90-90/90 O-ring combination, Radix 690 main blades, radix 105 tall blades, radix 4mm flybar paddles no weights, Jr DS8717 all around on cyclic, Futaba GY611-S9265 Gyro combo, O.S. Max .91 SZ-H PH Hyper Helicopter Engine with Pump, Youngblood Muscle Pipe 5, 30% Nitro looking for 1950 rpm head speed, Throttle Jockey PRO Governor with JRPS8700G Super Servo, Jr 9303 2.4g Radio. I wanted to try the Scott gray Reactor X Regulator but I can’t get my hands on one so I have an Arizona Regulator with a 3300 7.4v lipo that I will use unless any one has any better suggestions. All the equipment came out of my Raptor 90 that tips the scale at 12lb had good power but I’m also in the mile hi at 5,800 feet above see level so I hope the Avro comes in under that we will see. I had 710 blades on the Raptor so I hope the 690’s will give the Avro more pop. Well the weekend is coming soon so I need to get back working on it still have some work left on the tall and some tweaking to do on the head I would like to get done tonight so I can start working on electronics tomorrow.

P.S nice link thanks Bond007

Avro pilots, what is the total RTF weight of this machine? Just look heavy from all the pictures.

Thanks

Hi... Like Andy from Realraptors allready said the heli weights 5,3 KG without fuel (http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t408501p1/). Depends ofcourse on the bateries, electronics, etc. but following the Blitz guys the Gross weight is 4.6kg / 10.2lbs.

Anyhow on this machine you dont really notice 0,1 kg more o less

Dave

I will be happy with 11 we will see in about 2 days or so. it does not feel heavy and look at frame there is not much there but gear, engine and boom mounts its about 1/2" wider then the tail boom.

Can you move the motor up? Looks like the belt is riding on the top lip of the clutch bell pulley. You would rather run on the bottom part, as it will rip the lip off pretty quick (based on experience with similar Robbe helis). Also, turn the system in both directions and see if the belt settles into a good position, the belts tend to creep one way or the other, and it is directional. IF you don't like the way it creeps, you can flip the belt and it will go in the other direction. This will be made worse if the pulleys are not esactly parallel.

keepin' it real
