Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > Inadequate JetCat belts?

I just heard of a SECOND belt failure on the JetCat drive system and am beginning to wonder if maybe the belts just aren't up to the task. It's tough to save the heli in this situation because the turbine just keeps on humming along like nothing happened and you don't notice a problem until the blades stop....

Bob Wilcox, would you please comment on this?

Thanks,

- Bill Ludwig

Interesting

It would be interesting to know the full story behind these two belt breaks. I think the belts are adequate, does the problem lie else where

Last year I flew my JetCat 4 bladed EC135 for over 14 hours without any problems. I have now put 30 litres of fuel through my new 5 bladed Hughes 500, belts still look OK.

I have slowed my Hughes turbine down to 87K. At this speed it is quieter and uses less fuel. If I get a belt break I will be really pi**ed off if I don't notice until the blades are nearly stopped and the heli hits the deck, it would ruin my paint job Have a look at the Gallery on the JetCat USA site. http://www.sitewaves.net/jetcatusa/index.html

Wow..what a paint job!

That has to be the coolest non-scale paintjob ever done...very cool Mr. Hollins..I don't think anyone over here is running the 5 blader either..yours is the first I have seen..

Thanks for the nice comments.

I'm running the 5 blade head at 1200rpm, it's superb. It flys like it's on rails even at high forward speed. I've even let a few people fly it, that's how confident I am of it

I hope the elastic bands don't break.

I'd still like to hear from Bob Wilcox on this. I'd also like to know if there are signs of belt wear to look for so we can catch it before it's too late....

Toothed belts are funny in that they can fail with no indication of problems (just like the timing belts in auto engines). IMHO the best prevention is to limit the total time on each belt.

I agree with replacing the belts prior to failure, but what does that mean? Every hour, every 20 hours, every 200 hours....??

Bill,

Look for signs of the belt fraying at the edges, and belt dust on the FOD screen. If you clean the screen and the belt dust keeps on appearing then the belt is suffering.

JetCat Important Update

JetCat Owners

Important information

3/2/2003 HP5, Intermittent glow plug or false starts.

Sometimes the ground to the engine is intermittent because of the anodizing on the side plates. A quick work around for this problem is a direct ground strap from the start box mount and the engine. It can be easily made with 18 gauge wire and fork terminal connectors. Use a 2mm Allen to loosen the front cover screw and place one fork under the lock washer. Put the other fork on the start box mounting screw (2.5 mm Allen). If needed, contact JetCat USA for a ground strap.

1/3/2003 V4.OH ECU WARNING All Models
(Note: This "Bug" has been fixed in the new 4.0h software)
If you are operating the engine in single channel mode and enable the AUX channel for cruise control, then the following restrictions apply.
In the limits menu, operating with the turbine control off, but AUX channel on [:ON Turb Ctrl OFF] while using the speed sensor for cruise control, you must make sure that the AUX switch is in the middle position (1) when you take off. When the air speed reaches the minimum value to enable cruise control, it will immediately enter the mode your AUX switch is positioned to [e.g.: If you are taking off and have configured the AUX switch position (0) or (2) for speed hold and have the switch in that position, then as soon as you reach the minimum speed (~18MPH) for the cruise control to activate, the engine will no longer accelerate]. This can make for a very slow take off!
If you have a speed sensor, but only use it for limiting maximum airspeed -- and do not use the cruise or smoke functions -- disable the AUX switch [:Not Used]. This setting will not only disable the AUX switch, but free the receiver channel for other functions.
If you use the smoke functions and only employ a speed sensor for limiting the maximum airspeed, disable BOTH positions (0) and (2) of the AUX switch in the limits menu, for cruise control.
If you use the cruise control functions and operate the engine in cruise control mode, you must make sure the AUX switch is in the center position when you take off. An ECU revision will be available in the near future, that will ignore the AUX switch when the cruise control is first enabled at take off -- and will require cycling the switch if it was in position (0) or (1).

3/1/2003 FUEL FILTERS! Fuel and Starting Filters
We have had several complaints that the fuel and starting gas filters leak. If you are having problems with this, contact us with your serial # and we will mail you a new set of thicker o-rings. In addition, try putting a wrap of Teflon tape around the threads. This has helped to reduce the problem as well.

Hi Bill

We had trouble with the lower belt on HP5s we sold about a year ago. The problem was with the company making the belts. They were inconsistent and we were on the operational edge. Now we have the primary belt custom made for us and it works perfectly. I have not had one problem with them yet. They are on all the HP5s we have shipped since May of last year. You should have no trouble getting 25 hours of service.

Jason wanted more power so I reluctantly upped the RPM to 100K to give him a head speed of 1400 RPM. After 4 flights he ripped ALL the teeth of the top belt by sever loading the unloading of the blades. I thought it may have been because of previous shipping damage from Florida Jets but after replacing the belt, it did it again at Tucson. I have reduced the RPM back to 94K. However, JetCat is now offering a 9mm wide top belt / gear upgrade for higher head speeds and heavy aerobatics.

The belts are fine for our normal operating RPMs. And for Jason’s helicopter, he made two perfect auto-rotations in both cases with no damage. You can tell you are loosing power before the blades stop.....

I am getting the upgrade in my shipment this week. I need to put it on Jason\'s unit and have him \"wring it out\" to see if it does the trick with the 1400 RPM + head speeds and his \"gentle style of flying\". I don\'t know the price yet since Germany sent these few upgrades for test purposes.
