Main Discussion > Flying Thumbs - Switched To Pinch Technique

I have been flying for approx. 2 years now, and only the past 7 flights have I started using the pinch method/technique in the control system.

It takes a little to get used to it, but I am finding it really good. Seems I have more control, and more precious control over my model.

I have 30% exponential and I think I will reduce this amount, it seems like I need to because the stick feel a little 'dead' using the pinch method - and the 30% active.

Just wonder about other things on this method and/or other methods including thumbs.

thoughts/comments?

Thanks,
Dean

Just depends on what your are used to. I have been a thumber for a long time. Started flying helis on the sim with T/FF but when I got the real radio in my hands it was right back to thumbs... I have seen guys switch both ways though.

Thumb

I pay alot of attention to what different people use for how they hold the stick, and found that usually not always but usually they are people who are just average pilots. I lost some speed in staying ahead of the heli when I tried the pinch so I went back to the thumbs. I couldn't even do some manuvers with the pinch I could do with thumbs.

I pinch the sticks when I'm hovering , but its all thumbs for doing aero's etc.

Can get more precise hovering pinching the sticks.

I wish I'd learned using the pinch technique. I hover with thumb and forefinger, but do aeros with thumbs.

I tried to do it with thumb and forefinger, but it just felt wrong...

I always tell the newbies to try and learn with thumb and forefinger.

After years of flying thumbs last summer I retrained myself using the pinch method. This works better for me. I can't say it was easy to retrain myself but many hours on the G2 helped me.

I know a few really good thumb flyers and it works for them. I found the pinch method works better for me, more precise, more relaxing, better control overall.

It's whatever works for you. I found the pinch method is more precise for my flying style.

Jeff

To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

Hello Dean
Everybody that I have got to switch from a Thumber to pincher have said what you have about better and more precise control.

Mostly thumbs, works ok with pinch on G2, but use thumbs when doing it for real.

Well, thanks for the input everyone.

I agree that there is a transition period when switching from thumb to forfinger and thumb...

I have started the transition now, I've had 7 flights using the pinch method. I have a sim which I have been using this method aswell.

And, while there is a period of time to adapt to the different technique, I think it will be worth it, and thus far it is aswell.

Hovering is different now, better control, more precious movements etc...

I have done some autorotations with this method, it takes some getting used to, but after the first tank of autos the heart attach feeling coming in at -7 degrees pinching the sticks it calmed a little....

Well, back to the practicing on the sim with the pinch test.

Thanks,

Happy Hovering,
Dean

Sounds like I'm good company, then, I fly thumb & finger on the cyclic and thumb only on the collective/rudder. No idea where I picked up such strange habits.

My hands are to small for the pinch method, I've tried it and couldn't move the sticks smoothly or to the extremes. I think the only way I could do it is with one of those big bulky transmitter tray doodads, I think I'll stick to the thumbs.

I couldnt decide between the two and now fly the left stick pinch and the right stick thumb, pinch in a hover.

works for me i guess.

i learned on thumbs only. i learned about the pinch method later and tried to learn it. on g2 with the joystick that they supplied, i wasn't a big fan of it and kept catching myself switching back to thumbs. i tried plugging in my jr tx to the simulator, and i love the accuracy of the pinch thumbs. now as soon as my new clutch comes in i will be taking my first flight outside with the pinch / thumbs!

Oooooo im scared to attempt using the pinch method. Im happy with my thumbs but i will say its impossible to fly with your thumbs for a long time or on a cold day. Ive had to land several times because i couldnt feel where my thumbs were going. This has only happened on cold days. Its the same feeling as when you sleep on your arm and it goes dead. I can still fly the models but it doesnt feel safe.......

i think it depends on how far you've advanced before you try switching either way. if you're at the hovering level it probably won't make much difference. but if your controls are set up to be very sensitive for 3-d and you're already used to thumbs or pinching, then it's more likely you'll run into problems. i've flown thumbs forever and i've tried the old nipple pinch on the sim but i overcorrect like crazy and always go back.

I had another few flights today, did some more autos and some inverted flight.

Second time doing autos using the pinch method, first time flying inverted with the pinch method... I like it, I feel I am getting more control by far, I think it has improved my flying.

Thanks for the replies.

tried both thumbs and pinch.
Found that it's easier to control with thumbs and flip switches.
Well, that's my personal perference.

I guess it's a matter of preference, but I started out with the thumb technique, and decided to try the "pinch technique" later. It felt awkward at first, but I noticed I had better control, with the "pinch".
Now it's second nature to me, and what I'm the most comfortable with.
