The new separate http://runryder.tv media server is now online.

All RR WMV file links now point to this new high speed server.

A previous announcement about upload policy is now being modified.

Instead of uploading large files, RR is going to ask you to mail in original source content (3 minute edited vids) via DVD-R to RR's office for encoding. We will announce a contest (cash awards) for the best user contributed videos.

As with current policy, user contributed videos cannot be quasi commercials. No commercial titles or watermarking. Listing location, pilot name and a brief list of components is fine.

Edit content down to 3-4 minutes. Export to AVI and then burn to DVD-R.

Mail DVD's to:

move vids

Sounds like antiquated method having no upload option.
Won't a portion of poeple just upload to other well known sites instead?

I smile, cause I've no idea what's going on.

It's about encode quality derived from original source.
Uploading gigabytes of source video files is unrealistic.

All RR videos are now being served via the new rrTV video server.

Splitting the load (pages and videos) between two servers will make the site more responsive.

My suggestion would be for RR to recommend which tools to use to encode... along with a template... for example... if you go to http://www.videohelp.com/ you will find many articles and tools to properly encode to the various standards. If RR has a standard to follow I am sure there are tools and articles there that will assist.

I agree with spottedcow. With high speed uploads, we should be able to supply the format you recommend with the software you recommend.

Thanks,
Chris

Agreed. Mailing in disks?!?! Welcome to 1990. Like spotted cow said, recommend encoding software and only support a few formats. How hard is that?

snail mail and disks....what a step forward

Pay a membership fee and maybe you'll get the bandwidth you need to upload huge files. Condsidering everything is done for free for us your getting a pretty good deal I think

you pay membership to almost all sites...you look at ads.

2nd, since when is 50megs huge? We're not talking about a gig or two of raw video. Plus, we're talking about the one time upload of the PRE-encoded file here. Considering it will downloaded by users many times over, I fail to see your logic.

My response was in answer the comment I quoted, about mailing in disks. I don't see anything in my post commenting about uploading pre encoding files.

It's crazy to think we are going to spend the time to burn to DVD and address a large envelope (who has those around the house?) and mail it in?
There are WAY too many sites that will host good quality video to have to resort to snail mail in order to have it hosted by RR.

I believe the idea is a good one (better videos = more visitors, more visitors = greater ad revenue). However, don't make your customers jump thru hoops to get you the content; instead - make is easy for them.

What's crazy is the quality. RR is using broadcast grade hardware and software to acquire and then encode the following Windows Media video.

The forth video set is up. Many more to come.
RR's new video hardware and software is taking time to sort out.

Having to mail it in also screens out the casual video junk. This way you need to put a little effort in the project, not just click and your done.

This is the first time I have seen this thread and I thought for sure it was an April Fools joke post until I looked at the post date! LOL.

Mailing in video files.....

is antiquated to say the least...
The ones who find it too nutty...will give their material to other sites that are easier to deal with..no question. This just boils down to a money issue and if this forum can't afford it...well that just the way it goes...I will say this...the fancy new video server isn't all that fancy if you're that concerned about A dirt cheap storage issue...too bad.
