e-JR Voyager E > Flying 4-cell version with 3-cell set-up

Hi,

It's been quiet on this forum, and I'm wondering if you all
have stopped flying your SVEs. Well, I haven't.

I bought the conversion kit to convert my 3-cell version into
4-cell version. However, as the subject says, I'm flying it
with 3-cell set up. The motor and the ESC are the ones that
came 3-cell version kit. I've just begun test flying it, but
so far, I've not encountered any issues except for the loss
of about 30 seconds of flight time.

Motor: NHM-30-8BL
Pinion: 19T from Quick Japan
ESC:NHA-70-SB
Servos: JR DS 559's for swash and S9254 for rudder
( These servos contribute to the heaviness and
are to be replaced with lighter ones )
Gyro: GY401
Pitch Range: +/- 12
Blades: 425 FRP blades for Lepton
( The carbon rotors that came with the conversion
kit, JRC430, are to be used when I've completed
the test flights )
Motor RPM: 2200rpm at 0 pitch with 90% throttle
Batteries and fligt times:
TP 3300mAH --- 5 min 30 sec
FP Evo25 2500mAH --- 4 min 30 sec
HP LVZ 2500mAH --- 4 min 30 sec
Fligt Style: Park Flying with occasional flips and loops

I haven't measured the total weight, but, compared to the
3-cell version with the after-market metal parts from QJ
or KSJ for the head and tail, it feels a little less heavy.
The batts and motors are slightly warmer because of the added
load with the larger pinion.

Possibly not a lot of action because JR is sitting on bringing it to the United States. This heli will sell great if the price point is within range of the competitors and they shed the Voyager name as it's reputation is not great here.

I've sent numerous emails to Horizon Hobby (US Distributor) and have yet to get a response. I have heard that the the US version is to be called Vibe 500 (smart move) and that it was to be available late January 2008. It's now late February and nothing on the website and no information from anyone I've contacted including JR Heli Division which has also not responded to my inquiries. It's a shame to as I moderate the JR Voyager E on Yahoo! Groups and have had many ask for more details on this Heli.

Hopefully JR has not changed it's mind on bringing it to the US market. I think it will do quite well if it is marketed correctly although that's not something JR has a strong track record of here in the States

ScaleCrazy,

Well, I can't speak for JR, but I guess they're watching
how their new SVEs are accepted in Japan's market first.
From what I read on the net, SVEs are relatively well
received here in Japan, though, since the recent release
of T-REX 500s, I'm not so sure if they'll turn out to be
as successful as JR wishes them to be.

Akira,
In the last month, I have resurrected my old VE, I wanted to get back into heli's and really didnt have $$ to go out and buy a Trexx, my VE was stock, the nicad packs are were dead, and the brushed motor was beat. I am an elecric fixed wing pilot and have a good stock of outdated in-runner brushless motors & controllers, none of them with 3000 kv,(like a Hacker!) so i had to "modify", I used a MEGA 22-20-3, a 20T pinion and a 4S 2070 TP lithium pack. My speed controller is the new E-flite 40amp pro series, which has a bec which will handle up to 6S packs, it also has a programmable heli mode. With this setup I was able to get 1800 rpm head speed. I am a novice, hover & basic circles, nothing fancy. To my surprise, the VE's maiden flight was rock-solid, a few clicks of right rotor trim and and the Futaba GY240
held the nose straight & true. The VE sure has a solid feel.
I need to get some new blades, also my pinion gear was made from an R/C car pinion that I drilled for the 5mm shaft, and reinforced with an r/c plane 1/4 wheel collar, that was bored and pressed onto the pinion to give it more meat so the set screw will hold.
That's it!

tOM,

Yes, VEs were and still are good learner helis, I agree. In fact,
I learned to hover tail-in and side-in with my original VE. With
the mild headspeed they are not so intimidating and scary to fly
them relatively close to you while you learn basic hovers. The
notorious wobbles, however, were rather frustrating to me and that's
why I stopped flying my original VE.

I love my current SVE. I've almost nailed down nose-in hover, and
am just starting to fly it inverted. It flies for roughly 4 min 30
secs with a 2500mAH battery and 5 min 30 sec. with a 3300mAH
battery. I'm in need of purchasing a few more packs, and haven't
decided yet whether to buy 4-cell batteries or 3-cell ones. If,
with a higher voltage and less amp draw, it flies for over 5 mins
with a 4-cell 2500mAh battery, I would probably choose them.
