Conversion

Tail Fin, I removed the snap in section of the tail fin so it would mount close and square.



I then drilled 5 holes in the fin, 4 for screws and 1 for the alignment boss on the tail gear box. I used nylon spacers from the local hardware store for spacers. These spacers are of the hard type and do not compress.

The top horz fin was drilled and bolted to the vertical fin.

The Hirobo frame was used to show mounting hole placement on the delrin mounts and then on the floor of the heli. Spacers were used when blind holes were encountered.



Next up will be mounting the landing gear and the alteration needed.

After working with the frame to fuse mounts for 2 weeks I have decided to go with aluminum spacers. New pics will follow as well as the landing gear upgrade.

Here are some pics of how the tail fins were attached to the rear rotor housing. I used nylon spacers from the hardware store and cut them to size. You will need to increase the screw length also.




This is a picture of the frame mounting bracket that I thought would work great. It took up too much room and was too tall. So I machined these aluminum blocks, now they work great.




The next pic is what is left of the mid section firewall. I had to cut out the center for the servo mounting frame. So in order to re gain the firewall strength I made an aluminum backup firewall that matches the altered plastic firewall.

This is the tail housing that i had to remove all the plastic screw bosses that held the two halfs together. I glued the point where both halfs come together and then I epoxied the inside seam. The tail boon will slide through the housing with little to no resistance. I found some blue spray paint at Walmart that is a perfect match for this blue police heli.

The forward fuse was attached to the mid section with 4 plastic knobs, this was a problem whenever you wanted to split the two pieces. I removed them and drilled holes so I could use an allen wrench and nylocks to keep things together. At the top of the forward fuse I added an aluminum strip with tabs that will help hold the mid section together since I removed a small section so the servos would clear.

My next big problem was where should I place the fuel tank? In the rear of the mid section looked good but, I wanted to have the exhaust exit the heli through this area. How about under the Hirobo frame and on top of the mid section floor? Not big enough. OK, behind the firewall and in front of the Hirobo frame. That would give me a 3 inch high by 1.5 inch wide by 5 to 6 inch long tank. With a top cap or hose nipples.



This picture shows the delrin mount before it was replaced. You can see the narrow gap in front of the Hirobo frame.

I have two questions,
1, how do you say HIROBO,
is it Her-row-bee?
or maybe Hi-row-bo,
or Her-row-bee?
2, does anyone know where to find small 1/4 turn door or panel locks or push in snap pins so I can mount them on the doors and have them stay closed. Yes the hinges are intact and work but with the heli vibrations they will never stay closed.

Magnets work pretty well. get ya an old hard drive and rip it apart for the magnets in them, they are very strong! I use them for almost everything.

Watersteps; for your landing gear, if you are using the original ones from the toys r us heli, i reccommend, reinforcing them some way they break very easily.

Landing Gear

Thanks Flipped, I cut skids off the landing gear and added the skid holders from another landing gear, see pic. I then decided to brace the legs, I came up with bicycle spokes, they work great. And they come with adjustment screws. I drilled two small holes in the very top of the leg and then a larger hole in the skid. The adjuster fits in the skid and when installed can be adjusted to keep heli sitting on all 4 skid rubbers. I then drilled out the 6 mounting screws and installed socket head screws that go completely through the mid section floor.
If they don't hold up I will look for some 50, 60 ,or 90 landing gear with the short legs on the front (I think they call them low profile) and long legs on the rear (regular landing gear).

I'm back

Business trips and hospital kept me away for a while. I have a plan change, I'm tired of nitro eating my fingertips and the mess and the noise. I'm going back to electric, my last electric build was a TSK MyStar 30. So watch for the change over, Mr RR should this post go to the electric conversion forum?

Toy Electric Conversion

Hello again,
Going to electric means I need more stuff, motor, motor mount, ESC, batteries and so on. I ordered the HHI mount and received it yesterday. I picked up an Hyperion H3025 - 10 CF motor and 80 amp ESC. The motor is 815Kv and I read somewhere that with the stock shuttle pinion and gear my gear ratio is 9.625:1. Now all that is great to know if you know what to do with it. Will this give me enough head speed to lift a heavy fuse? I weighted the heli before with no motor or fuel or electronics and it was about 5 lbs I think.
If someone knows how to fiqure this out please let me know. OK I'm going back to the workshop and work on this heli.
