Hi Guys and Gals,
Has anyone tried to use the AH-6 Little Bird or the Police or Rescue heli's as a shell for a scale RC heli???
I have a complete Police and a complete Rescue helis from 21st Century and I was just wondering how someone else may have done it.

21st Century conversion to RC heli

Hey thank guys, I found some posts after Hoverup pointed be in the right direction. (Which I should have known, Duh) So I started one conversion on the Police heli and it is going great. I will take some pics and tack on to this thread.
Man, I learned one thing not to do, and that is tell a toy collector what you are doing with the heli you are buying from him, whew, they get all kind of upset. So now I will sneak around and buy some 1:6 models and keep my mouth shut. Oh the fun we have trying to build a neat little heli. Later Guys
Thanks to all for your comments.
Hey Tap or Snap Police heli looks gooood. I see how you attached the front bell to the mid section, OK.

Today is 3/2/08 and I will start to show pictures and descriptions of my in-process conversion. The alterations, ideas, additions are my way of building a scale heli that looks good and flys (I hope). Keep checking this post for more info.

First off I do not mean to offend any other model maker, what I do when I build is the way i want to do it. Some people have gotten down right up-set with me because I "mess up a great collectable", I like to call it " up-grade a great collectable". OK now that that's out of the way let's get building.
When I openned the box with my new(used) 1:6 Police Heli from 21st Century Toys I was very impressed. Very strong fuse, perfect size, and a lot of detail. OK that's enough looking, take it apart, almost everything comes apart.

Some parts are gluded together and they must be pried apart. The front bell actually pops off the main fuse. After everything was apart I removed all the screw hole bosses inside the fuse and the tail section. More to come.

Next I had to determine what airframe would work without chopping up the airframe or the heli. Since I have shuttles sitting, hanging and boxed up in the work shop, why not a 30 shuttle? Here the airfame from a butchered heli is placed in the fuse and blocked up so I can measure for the airframe mount which bolts to the to floor of the heli. I want to keep the original tail boom so it must be in line with the main shaft and drive gears.

Next make the airframe mount.

Airframe mount,

Here is the airframe and heli floor ready to go in for fitting. The heli floor is really 4 pieces, the 2 in the pic and 2 side boards that get gluded back on later. The small piece is only gluded to the large floor piece so I decided to bolt it instead. When I determined the measurements for the mounts I used 1/8" X 1" X 1" delrin (?) strong, light, nylon material to make the mounts. First the mount had to .8125 high in the rear and 1.450 high in the front. Then it had to be on two different planes, see pics. It turned out real nice and it placed the frame in perfect position.

Why didn't I use aluminum spacers instead? I want to try to stop any excess vibration from moving to the heli fuse. The nylon angles will provide a little give and take.

Conversion

Hello all, take a look at the inside, top part of the fuse, the screw bosses were removed to allow for the tail boom.

If you go to my gallery you can click on the picture an d see what I mean.

Now I said that to say this, the tail housing is the worst part of this conversion. You must really grind and scrape and sand the inside bosses away. When I was all but done I wrapped the boom in fine sand paper and sort of clamped the tail housing around the boom with my hand then I proceeded to make a big pile of blue plastic by working the boom back and forth. It took about 45 minutes but it worked great. The boom will now slide through the housing with ease.

OK the top left pic shows you what I removed from the cockpit firewall and the mid section firewall. This was done to allow the servos to extend into the cockpit.

The lower left pic shows a smal notch that had to be removed from the top of the mid section firewall lip so the servos would clear.

Conversion

Hello Again, since my last post the tail housing decided it does not like glue so it came apart. I used super glue to put it back together. I plan on using 2 part epoxy on the inside housing joints. It will take s long time to apply the epoxy via a long dowel rod and a flashlight.

Next post will show how I attached the tail fin to the tail boom housing.

Here ih my conversion I did about 3 years ago. I had an O.S. 50 in her....and she flew GREAT. If you go with a smaller motor you will lose commanding control and climb out power.
