e-E-Sky Honey Bee- Lama- Belt CP- E-Smart > Pinions, 10t vs 9t.

I have a Honeybee King 2 that I bought with along with a brushless motor and ESC. However when I tried to press the original 9t pinion onto the BL motor it split. The only pinion I could find at the LHS was a 10t with set screw with a semi tapered gear.

My question is, with the 10t will I get lower headspeed and have to compensate with less pitch? I know about the issues with tail authority with the HBK2 so I put on Venom 3DXL (400 size) aluminum tail box and blades using a poly spacer ring.

But... my next step is an aluminum 3DXL head with 300 blades as compared to what seems to be 280 sized blades stock. Larger blades all around to compensate for the added weight but one more tooth on the pinion concerns me, I'm worried about too little power even with the brushless.

I'm also running a Trex 450 aluminum swash, not that it has much effect of rotational mass.

Run-ups so far have been good but I was wondering if anyone else has been down this avenue already. Another Frankenstein I guess. Course, I can't leave anything alone.

haven't had that happen to me, ran with stock motor, then upgraded to 3100kv, replaced it with 300HDX 3800 with 9t pinion, had 10t on 3100kv motor...go to helidirect, check out pinions, they have a variety of sizes, stick with 9t pinion, more head and tail speed

i suck at this, but having the time of my life with it!

9T more headspeed than 10T?

A 10T will give more headspeed, better stability in a breeze, quicker cyclic, better tail (we all love better tail), and more punch with less collective.

But, at the cost of slightly shorter flight times.

I recently made the switch to 10T from 9t, and while it wasn't a night and day difference, I do notice better performance. I only lost a minute or less of flight time.

The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.

I went from 8 to 10 on the 300HDX3800 it was too docile for me on 8t flew like a trainer heli (not that their is anything wrong with that) But it wouldn't fly well in wind. I fly the align grub screw pinions with loctite on the grub I also turn the pinion upside down so the better part of the tapered pinion meets the main gear. Now I fly only idleup and it will cut wind with the best of them.

heres a vid with my setup just for a little proof using CNC esky head and brushles mentioned above rest of heli is stock. Got good ff and gobs of power.

Thanks, guess I had my math backwards thinking a larger pinion would mean slower head speed.

Still have to get used to idle up though.

If you can do FF well Idleup will make flying easier. I just started flying strictly idleup a few months ago. Now I wonder why it took me so long.

Yea, it's just a matter of getting used to the negative pitch and getting used to mid pitch on the stick. Letting go of relying on the soft settle of reduced throttle.

I tried idle up today and hit it too soon and went into negative pitch, no damage thanks, but I'm on a new learning curve. I really do like how responsive the tail is in idle up though. Feels like a Co-axe almost. Spins are great.

Baby's got authority. Trex tail too.

If your using a programmable radio you can adjust the switch to be smoother. But I have learned to go to midstick 0 pitch and hit idleup then takeoff and fly. Landing is the tricky part not shutting the throttle all the way down when your on the ground once again land usually end up at midstick flip to normal mode then shut the throttle down.
