Hi Guys,

just a quick question, what tenion is being run on your tail belts? I ask this because I have had one of the tail shaft bearing collapse. Initially the dust guard came apart from the bearing, but bearing showed no sign of problems, had two more flights, then noticed tail vibrating on landing,on inspection all the balls had gone. Have since replaced bearings, but because they are quite small ,5x9x3 compaired to T rex and Raptor which has 5x12x5,I wonder if this might be an ongoing problem to keep a close eye on?

cheers Kev

Most Pilot/builders all have different ideas on this, mine is where I apply slight finger pressure to the front side behind the drive pully about 1/8th movement on the belt and you will feel the tension tighten. This is just a rull of thumb that I have allways followed even on other belt driven tail setups.has not failed me yet.

Like buzzsaw, I set mine so that I can push the belt in about 1/8". I have used this tension on all my belt driven helis.

Kev,
I just finished building my X50, and I noticed that the aluminum tail rotor pulley assy. was putting a lot of drag on the bearings when rotated. I took everything apart to see if there were any shims on each side of the pulley, that I could replace with thinner ones. What I found was a one piece aluminum pulley with no shims.

I just took some 3m wet&dry 400 paper on a T-bar(flat) and carefully removed about .005 on each side of the pulley. I was then able to get a zero slop fit of the pulley in between the bearings without any side play. This reduced the drag to zero on the bearings.

This is an area that will not just "break in" if it is too tight. It will just wear out the tail shaft bearings. I also noticed that these bearings are on the light side for this application...even the Raptors have larger bearings. At least by getting the right bearing preload, they will last way longer.

Fury,I really did not have any problems in the tail at all, however I will say the more I ran it the better it got.I noticed after about the 7/8 flight on My X50 that the tail really started to settle in real nice and smooth, very fluid if ya know what I mean.I try to explain to all the guys that have been making the switch to the X50 and buddy,I been talking to some folksJust try to be alittle patient in the area's of importance on this machine such as the tail,hub/fan and runout as well as head setup as it is not really complicated at all, sorta builds like a 90 but just on a smaller scale,as an end result you will have a really smooth machine that will do it all.
