My sentiments entirely as especially when we’ve had so much input from him in the past.
You get to know those you can trust and those you take with a pinch of salt and that’s why I said I was puzzled because of the source.

Sometimes humor turns dry. And didn't see it until I reread the post in the morning. A mistake was made by me, Wally

Well, its not all lost...First, you have to get use to Wallys personalty. If you talk to him on the phone, he will crack a joke right in mid sentance of a serious conversation..thats just the way he is...I understand how this looks, but he understands now...

Since not all is loss with this subject, the exhaust side hole that stabilizes the stock muffler could be a point that you could see, or have a leak, but only if the case gaskit is leaking at that hole point around the bolt...
If you have both case halves apart, you can see it more clearly...This has never been a problem for me, because I put new gaskets when I bring down a engine this far. I have never seen one leak to this day.. ....
If you ever see oil, or its real dirty, then you might have a problem..I think if it did, you probably couldn't run the engine it would be to lean...

Now, lets move on.....

Well today I went testing/flying the gasser again.
I havent been particularly active with it lately, as working with heli's AND having it as a hobby/passion can sometimes get old lol.
So I messed about with running a 1 inch gap between the header and muffler.
Much better, finally the needles start to actually have some effect on tuning, and Im no longer a hairy crazy closet gas nutter
So I run the first tank through, land a few time to tweak needles.
All going well, fuel up, take off, pitch pumping a bit.
Just getting a feel for what the motors doing, and then the exhaust note changes to a horrible crackly sound.
That would be the rubber exhaust coupler having a hole blow in it lol.
Im still happy, as at least now Im making progress again.
I know my first Hanson header was pig ugly, but that thing hauled ass big time.
So now Im back on that path again finally.
I just need to find out what exhaust coupler tube to use now.
Any ideas?
I used automotive heater hose, and it didnt like it much lol. It was silicon and fibre re-enforced.
Cheers

If you bling it, they will come :D

Hi gorn, I had the same thing happen to me with my QWW gasser, scares the hell out of ya! I've since used this tube and haven't had a problem since. It comes in different sizes too.

Hope this helps, cheers kosta.

Gorn, I used steam hose, it has braided steel ply in it and very durable, you can find this in your local hose supplier, they are made in the USA just cut it down to your desired length

Well I tried to find some steam hose locally. No luck unless I want to drive 60 miles plus to have a look.
So I got some more of the same silicon heater hose.
This time though, I have increased the gap between the header and muffler another inch.
I have also pushed some copper tube inside the rubber coupler so that there is not so much direct oil/fuel contamination on the rubber.
The guy that sold it to me also mentioned that once it has been hot and cooled....dont mess about with it or it can crack.

So today is very blustery swirling wind, and I almost sat home playing F.E.A.R on my PC (cool game)
Anyway, I drag my lazy ass out to my testing spot and crank her over.
Started quickly, nice idle, very nice transition and we're airborne.
Kicking a little bit, but doesnt sound like she's "on the pipe" yet.
So I flip into idle 2..........ohhhhhh yeahhhhhhh
The wind was a hindrance....until the downwind leg lol.
Man this thing hauls ass.
Im extremely happy today. I didnt even have to touch the needles.
I just chopped the motor after half a tank of goosing around, checked the plug, still a tad rich. Put the plug back in and flew some more.
It sounds awesome (subjective to the individual), most will say its errrrr LOUD!@!@!@! lol
I just need a fine day off to cruise about and finalise my needle settings now, then its engage the GV1 time.
I know that these posts have seemed like the tuned pipe is far too fiddly etc etc for most.
But now that I understand what makes a difference and how, seting up someone elses would be easy.
For anyone that has been put off, dont be. The more people out there using these, the larger the knowledge base is, the easier it gets for everyone.
My biggest hurdle was no local help for my problems, and lack of time to pursue the fix in a timely manner.
My inspiration to keep going was my friend Shiro.
He would give me encouragement and share what was working for him.
My hat is off to this man, a true nice guy in the hobby.
Now I get to truly enjoy what I consider to be the finest flying heli out there, My obscene Maxum
Me and Mr J.D are celebrating tonight

Took the Maxum to the lake today.
Nice weather finally, and all to myself out there.
Start her up, governor kicks in (oh sweet jesus, about time lol)
I fly some FFF in idle 1 at 1800rpm, bring her in and kick it up to idle 2 1900rpm.
Just doing some full power climbs and some mild pitch pumping.
Just trying to see how the motor sounds and if my tuning feels right.
Exhaust note changes to a rattly tin can.........that would be another exhaust coupler blowing out then
I land, and sure enough, there is a 1 inch tear in the hose.
Im going to get some steel braided hose, enough of this nancy boy silicon rubbish.
Sigh, some days heli's are a drag

If you bling it, they will come :D

huh

We have a vendor at work that we use high pressure braded hoses for leak testing. I will see where they come from. I cant believe that you are burning through hoses like this. The pressure or the heat more is tearing them up more?

I had the same problem and it worried me so I change back from the Q.W.W pipe to the Century V3.
I've used the Spectra, Vario and Predator all with tuned pipes and never had this problem before; I'm thinking they are running too hot on the exhaust side to keep blowing these joints.

huh.

When you say hot how hot are you saying. I used to be 270+, but now I am running wally's fan and am around 230-245 exhaust temps. Without the tuned pipe we got to 200 even with a v3 on exhaust temps. So yes there is a diffrence.

But again there was a substantial 'lack' of power atleast to me with a v3.

Granted but at what cost, The headed turned purple after the first flight and the joint was destroyed, I don’t need the extra power but I do need the engine to last so I made the choice to stay with the V3.
