| The machine you're flying isn't the main concern. It's the engine.
The FunTech HN-90 is a very good muffler. FunTech makes excellent products that are very useful for FAI-style flying. You'd have to call (not email) James at O'Neal Manufacturing if you'd like a FunTech muffler. Be sure to ask for the "regular" HN-90, not the "Type 3D" version.

Zimmerman also makes some nice products. Their mufflers are unique in that they're made out of stainless steel rather than aluminum. I owned a Zimmerman once, and the finish work is some of the best I've ever seen. Call Len Sabato at Advantage Hobby if you'd like a Zimmerman exhaust. The last I knew, Len was using Zimmermans on his contest machines... the 2630R, I believe, but don't quote me on that.

A less expensive alternative that has really come to surprise me is the Century Silent Power 90. I currently have one on my machine, and I think ErichF used to use them as well. They're only $70 from Century. It looks similar to a KSJ or Hatori pipe. I heard an anecdotal story once about one person who bought a new SP-90, and happened to find Hatori documentation in the box. I don't know if that means anything... take it as you will. I can tell you from personal experience that it's well worth the $70.

Some of the guys around here use Hatoris, but I can't tell you the product number. I've heard that you have to be a little more picky with the Hatoris and not just go for the JK signature pipe or something like that. My understanding is that they have a pipe that is better suited for FAI, but I can't tell you which one. Maybe Gordie can chime in... I think he uses Hatori mufflers.
That's all I can tell you. I hope it helps.
EDIT: I just saw that you're in Australia. I have no idea where you would get the above products in your country. Sorry about that. |
