We all know what happens when we turn off the tx while the heli's powered up.

I just rigged up a charger for my Air Hogs Reflex that's been gathering dust since I was a fresh RADD grad. I lost the original charger and never bothered to look for it. Got to jonesing for some indoor heli action, and the King isn't trailer-friendly. My Havoc got the Zeppelin treatment ( "Trampled Underfoot" ). So I rigged something up that works. Anyway...

The Reflex is radio controlled, so how come it doesn't go nuts when you turn off the tx?

The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.

I can turn my tx off w/o the heli going nuts...I TRY not to - but sometimes forget. It's not a guarantee that the heli will cause death and destruction if it's not seeing the tx signal - but it not a good idea. With the signal loss there's nothing telling it to stay at 0 throttle, and a speck of RF noise or microprocessor hiccup could be intrepeted as something other than idle, allowing Murphy to take the controls.


Try an experiment: Run the Reflex up to a low throttle setting, then turn off the TX. Do the rotors stop or do they stay at the same speed? If they stop there might be some sort of failsafe built in to protect kiddies fingers and the helis delicate parts.

Did the experiment. The rotors stopped. Also turned the "heli" on with the tx on at full throttle. Nothing until I dropped throttle and brought it back up.

Must be a fail-safe. Which begs the next question (fill in the blanks):

If it's that easy to incorporate a fail-safe into a cheapie mass-produced toy, why don't...

Yep, it does make you wonder...
My Phoenix 35 (and many/most others) won't initialize unless the throttle is at minimum, and I know I've shut of the TX before the heli and I'm still here to tell about it. Will the e-Sky ESC go ballistic? I don't have one here to say...

Regardless - turning off the craft before the TX has always been a good idea - even with nitro planks. All servo/ESC settings are ambiguous w/o the TX reference settings. At any given time they could be benign - at other times they could have the heli do the chicken dance across the floor.

most good radios have failsafe....but they are designed to set the controls to a predetermined position,so that "while flying" if something goes wrong the controls go to the set point.....those AIR HOGS...are controled by infrared signals,at least the ones I have seen.....when there is no signal from the tx the heli is not doing anything....i.e. I dont think they will hover "hands off".like a tv remote,until you hit a button,nothing is happening..and are designed to be flown by kids....so safety is a priority.........our helis are receiving a signal all the time.....whether the heli is moving or flying or not........so....I guess they are assuming we are smart enough not to turn the TX off while the heli is armed,once is OK,you learn,if you keep doing it,repeatedly,maybe you should consider R/C cars

fender air hogs remotes are spring loaded throttle is forced to zero you have to fight against resistance to get the stick to move forward and when released it returns back to zero. And I dont believe the tail works until the main is engaged. therefore airhogs are really mechanically controlled to the off position but switch it to a different channel on the remote A,B,C or go out of range and sometimes they just keep on going.

Tryan, you and gibsonlespaul are thinking about the Havoc IR controlled helis. The Reflex is a coaxial radio controlled 'Hog, complete with tx and broken telescopic metal antenna. The throttle is spring loaded and dampened to return (slowly) to 0. The Havoc throttle will snap back like a mouse trap.

Maybe I shouldn't have got it running. It's making me want a Lama for indoor flying. The "purply stuff" fund may mutate into a "Lama" fund...

I see your right I was thinking havoc. Cant believe someone would pay $60 for the reflex when a lama is $88. I have only got to play with the reflex once wasn't impressed now the lama for a few bucks more I am very impressed all anyone needs is the space to fly it in as it is a bit bigger than a reflex. I would tell everyone to get a lamaV4 does it fly like a CP no not at all its an overgrown toy like the reflex but much better. And what other 4CH heli can you fly with your feet up on the coffee table watchin TV drinkin a cold one?

This Reflex was my very first remote-controlled heli. I had no idea the "real-deals" had gotten so inexpensive over the years. Oh, I kicked myself soon after the purchase when, during an internet search for Reflex mods, I saw the Honey Bee FP for $89.

So I did what any broke, struggling person would do. I bought the Honey Bee too.

Thus began the vicious cycle...

there must be a zillion versions of those things.......the ones my nephews have will drop like a rock if you change channel or go out of range.....so who knows.....I have never seen the one with the tx with an actual antenna...is that the one with 2 fans on the side???????.........I will say one thing...they ARE fun and durable....my 3 yr old nephew has had his for about 6 mos.....and it still works...if it can last with him its strong.....he flies it till it hits something and falls then starts over....no concept of half way yet......its full throttle or off......and he's dying to get hold of my TX

heres the reflex I flew fender wasnt much impressed it is what it is but its expensive compared to E-Sky helis.

I had one too and got rid of it. Too tough to steer. I kept my little havoc - it's a lot of durable fun for the money!

I love the lamaV4 but durability? NO But it is a 4ch I can not stand the havocs anymore the rudder is on the wrong stick and I keep trying to give it forward cyclic.

My daughter on the other hand likes the havoc a lot more than the lama so I guess I won that one. Although I would of rather lost that one.

One thing I thought of, is using one of thoes counter rotating heli's, one can work on nose in hovering. Pratceing moving the stick in the right ( Wrong ) diection, with out Crunchin Up the King. And like we talked the other day,if ya goof up, just let go of it. Could just about ware one out by the time ya get to 2nd nature. Yea,,,,,No.......? The vid was a riot.

The lamaV4 is an indoor 4ch heli with all the controls in the right place making it a great trainer or indoor toy for those that already fly a CP machine. It flys like the reflex but uses a swash instead of 2 little fans so it does some good FF. Cant believe you never saw my youtube vid pimping the lama. It is fun and flies itself. (literally)

Tex: Yep - I was thinking of it for working on nose in work. Especially when the weather is lousy outside.

I LOve that video ! How many helis can you put the TX on the ground, walk behind, grab the tail, redirect the heli's path, let go, walk back around, sit down, pick up the TX, and resume flying ???? I ask you with great relish !!

some scale ones are popping up like crazy also for 10-20 bucks more the E-sky 2.4ghz lama is going for $150 overseas also make sure they are E-Sky the name you know and trust..

that is stock out of the box I tweaked the swash linkages to get hands off flight and thats it. I got a vibration after 10 or so flights And My daughter beating the heck out of it. So I tore it down like the real things and checked the inner and outer shaft straight as an arrow. So I Got my trusty triflow out and lubed every bearing every shaft reassembled. Smooth as silk and longer flight times now. Youll finda china doesnt use a lube they just ram it in dry.
