As I was hovering inches above the snow shredded pieces of black rubber was being thrown out from the side of the heli. Immediately I engaged throttle hold and landed.

Below...
Part 216 (MJ2)... Tail belt pinion.

Underneath the pinion are left over shredded pieces from the tail belt. Originally you couldn't see the pinion as it was wrapped by the shredded rubber of the tail belt. I should have taken a picture first. Oh well.

As you can see the top cap of the pinion was ripped off.

Anyone know what might have caused this?

Here's how it looked for comparison...

Dang you did get lucky! I would guess that maybe a little fray of the belt got loose and pulled it into the pulley? I'm not sure.

On this pic I do not see part 216 with 14 teeth (MJ2), but instead part 358 with 16 tooth (J2). Was this a Maxi-Joker with 120 or 130 mm blades now or a normal Joker with 105 mm blades? When you have a Maxi-Joker you must have changed the pulley and worked in this area. Maxi-Joker out of the box always have a 14T pulley.

This sceanario is possible in my opinion:

The front roller besides the belt was not in the correct height (= too deep), so that the belt could jump between roller and flange shim or alternatively too high that the roller for itself has removed the shim. The belt has from the 90 degree turning in the tailboom an axle force with the tendence to going downwards on the front pulley and going to the left side at the tailwheel seeing from behind.

The part number I referenced to was from the manual. I should have counted the teeth.

This is a Maxi-Joker 2. I did not change the pinion. This is the pinion that came with the kit. This is one of the pre-assembled steps. Bag #5.

I'm using a 120 minicopter tail blades.

16.

Like I said this is the pinion that came with the kit.

The white particles you're seeing are from the belt.

First: Your pics are really excellent!

The brass roller has moved upwards and the lower bearing is outside, ok perhaps a post-damage.

But this big Maxi-Joker roller (11mm) does not work with the 16 tooth Joker pulley! For this 16T Joker pulley #358 you need the 9mm roller #441, this here shown shown 11mm roller #778 is for the Maxi-Joker pulley #216 with 14 teeth.
The roller has pressed the belt so extreme against the pulley that this might have melted or something else. Please note that the pulley MAY NOT touch and run on the belt, there must be a small distance of 0.2-0.3mm between belt and roller and only in high torque situations when the belt begins to jump over it is touching and driving the roller.

OK, from my sight it is now not to clarify who is responsible for that mistake, so you get the damaged parts in each case replaced from us. Please send a list what is defective that we can pack them asap.
We just pack a new series and I will add some stickers that identify in Maxi-kits the bags different from standard Joker kits (2,5,6,7) now clear for everyone as Maxi-bags and add a note outside of each Maxi-box.

Thank you for offering to replace the parts. I've emailed you with the short list.

To avoid this in future from now on the Maxi boxes are notes and also on the bags are additional stickers.

I have discovered another, problem with the roller on the MJ2. See attached pix. It appears that the brass spacer on the top of the roller was a little too long, which made the roller ride too low on the shaft. The bottom of the roller then pressed against the lower flange on the 14T pinion, which removed some of the brass from the bottom of the roller. I filed the spacer down. According to the manual, the spacer, part 716, is supposed to be a 3x4x3mm spacer. I have had to file mine down to about 2.5mm to keep it from riding against the lower flange.

Hi guys, today i discovered the same faulty parts on my MJ2...
I reccomend that all of you MJ guys out there double check your machinery, we wouldtn risk any serious injury caused by this mistake, do we?, stupid question

Safety first!

Chris glad you caught it in time! Man, damages could have been a lot worse if it happened during flight.

Well I just checked my first MJ2 kit. It looks like I had the wrong parts as well but in reverse. It came with the 14T pinion but with the smaller Joker2 brass roller. I'm not sure what kind of problems that could have posed.

Everyone PLEASE check your tail pinions!

The MJ2 SHOULD come with 14T and Joker 2 16T.

The brass roller diameter on the MJ2 is 11mm and Joker2 is 9mm.

The reverse doesnt really pose a problem as long as the belt tension is OK, in fact the original joker works just fine without the brass rollers at all.

You just always want to make sure that the brass roller is not turning with the belt in normal usage.

I just checked both my MJ2 and the J2. Both have the correct roller and pinion combinations. But I still had the problem with the roller riding against the lower pinion flange on the MJ2. Make sure the roller freewheels and is not binding against either the belt or the pinion itself.

If the belt tension is approximately correct, you could probably always fly without the roller. I don't think I'll try, though.

Steve S.

Steve

With the brass roller that's binding check that the bearings are centered in the brass roller. I realized the bearings could shift inside the roller. It's physically difficult to move by hand but mine were moved upwards by the belt and pinion. So that tells you how much force can be exerted within this assembly when things go bad.
