Curious: Anyone ever had a brushless motor shaft break due to the blades stopping suddenly?

This happened with my JGF 400DH and when I asked about it I was told that "it's a powerful motor and when the blade stop suddenly something has to give".

Maybe - but if this was the case seems that this would happen to a lot of other "powerful" motors as well - and if it does I don't hear about it.

I tend to think the shafts of these motors are too brittle - causing them to snap when stressed suddenly.

Ummm, yeah, and that something is usually the rotor blades and maingear, I've never seen the motor shaft be the weak link in the drivetrain

You would have to have steel gears and a fairly beefy head assembly to break the motor before something else broke. I've had main gears loose half their teeth on a sudden rotor stop and the motor didn't even notice

I learned to fly on a Trex, I learned to crash on a Blade CP...

I think it's a matter of the shaft being too brittle.

I had some hardned shafts I was saving. These come from various devices (CDROM drives, etc) that I pull apart. I'm the worst for squirreling stuff away but sometimes it pays off. Found some that were the exact size as the shaft that broke. A dremel tool with a cutoff wheel cuts these with no end distortion, so I'll take a section and make a new shaft.

JGF dosen't even list replacement shafts on his website - he says that this is because most people don't have the equipment for replacing a shaft. In that case they have to replace the entire bell - at $12.00

Thats interesting Jerry. So you actually have another shaft around your place thats the correct size for this motor? I bet you have an interesting shop. How is the armature assembled, press fit?

I had a motor shaft break due to the gear mesh being too tight. Of course this was a Venom 3DXL and they're not known for quality.

It's not a shaft, actually. Yet anyway... just a piece of hardned steel rod that I scrounged out of something I took apart - forgot exactly what it was. I do a little metal working with a small lathe and milling machine, and I have the basic measurement stuff like micrometers and guages. I went throught a bag of stock until I found some the right size. I think I can cut maybe 2 or 3 shafts from it.

I'm always building something or other so I tend to hang on to stuff that I think might be useful someday.

Before I found it I was going to try to make a shaft on the lathe - but that's some pretty small work. Would've been fun to try though.

The old shaft just pressed out. Did that on the drill press but I've found the lathe (with a chuck in the tail stock) good for that too.
