Throttle lever for the XLV which is in a tight spot. The part has less than 8 hrs run time. I'm curious as to why Vario uses a soft metal like brass on a part that needs a return spring? Obviously a formula for excessive wear. At least that's what I suspect the failure is from. Anyone else see this before?

Anyway, I had just rolled level from a low level turn to down wind and had to do a run-on auto. The landing resulted in a broken left strut where the aft crimp is made. All else seems fine though. Now I have to figure out what to substitute for this part as a brass part will NOT be used again. Problem is, there's not enough room to use a ball link under the carb. I'm thinking about adding one to the top of the throttle shaft where the return spring is installed. Any suggestions???

I used a Miniature aircraft spectra G throttle arm on my old gasser's 643/644 carb. Really nice. It won't fit on a 603 carb though. http://www.miniatureaircraftusa.com....asp?prod=105-7

if your going to crash, do it with style.

That looks like vibration damage to me Dan. My Benzines both use the top butterfly indicator actuated by a Vario ball-raced ball link (very expensive!) . You can see it in my gallery but Tom Fiddler had a nice mod that he was making for people some time back.

Thanks Paul, I agree that it's vibration damage but what motor doesn't vibrate during a very rich break in period...Vario has only seen this a couple times after sending out many parts. I have almost 3 gallons through it now and it is getting smoother and a lot happier now. I have a solution now from my 1/5th scale truck engine. It's a stamped throttle link that is flat and is keyed and held on with a screw.

Bottom line is that I had almost 8 hrs to discover it prior to complete failure. I missed it on what I used to consider a thorough preflight. That won't happen again as I changed my preflight approach. Instead of actuating the throttle and being happy with movement, I'll put my finger on the top butterfly indicator then actuate the throttle. That would've shown excess play and this could have been prevented.

That's good stuff Mike. Very clean and effective...Also, very easy to preflight at a glance.
