I have been thinking of getting my dad a Lama V4. I have heard from several folks that they are a blast to fly and easy also. So here are my Qs

1) Would this be a decent choice compared to a Blade CX2? I know there are a zillion upgrade parts for the CX but they cost twice as much.

2) How long will the little motors last? And is there an easy way to upgrade them to brushless?

Any more thoughts?

I had a V3 and they are challenging enough to be entertaining when you are first learning. Good bird overall and great for learning orientation. I miss mine, lost it at twilight and it rained overnight so the 4in1 was destroyed.

I've had a TREX 450 but had to sell it in the divorce and still have a Venom 3DXL but the electronics are so bad it never flew.

I'm looking at a HBK2 at the moment.

But, yes, for fun factor the Lama is great. I imagine it's got alot of people started into the hobby. I highly recommend getting the extreme blades from the get go. They survive most anything, and if he gets to the point of flying outdoors the metal heads with the links on the outermost points of the arms can handle winds just fine.

There is an upgrade motor package available (there are 2 motors BTW) but it's not brushless. I ran both and noticed no difference. I got about 9 minutes to a pack. In the learning curve 1 to 2 packs will have your hands shaking anyway.

I got a Lama 4 for my son. The current Lama v4 is quite a bit cheaper than CX2. The blades are in flexible blade grips so you can hit things and the blades just bend backwards. Just straighten them out and your off again. The CX2 comes with a 2.4 radio which is nice. I hear there will be an updated Lama coming out soon that has a 2.4 radio.

It does fly pretty well and you can hover around the house and land on anything. The rate gyro isn't perfect so you'll need to provide input to the tail throughout the battery.

We haven't had it long enough to wear out the motors. There are lots of upgrades for it, but so far I don't think it really needs it. I'd prefer a better gyro, but the gyro I'm used cost more then entire Lama RTF kit.
