hi
as Jack said , there is no simple answer to pinion size , it is all based on the type of flying you are interested in

take your target engine RPM and divide it by your target headspeed

say 12,500 / 2000 = 6.25

then take 170 for the main gear and divide by your answer 6.25

170 / 6.25 = 27.2

you have to round the answer off , in this case to 27 , pinions love to be intergers , depending on the answer , you may want to round it up

so a 27 tooth pinion spinning at 12,500 RPM will turn the main gear at about 2000 RPM

when i was talking about a 25 tooth pinion , i was thinking of 12,500 engine RPM with a headspeed of 1800 RPM , if i remember correctly

you have a lot of options for engine RPM and headspeed , so it would be easy to come up with all different pinion sizes , there are a few companies that make aftermarket 0.7 MOD pinions in different sizes , and some of them are quite affordable

i have been flying on the stock 20 tooth and it is doing fine for me , HTH , dana

getting closer to off the shelf now, (23t pinion), i wonder if the frame kit from there will be a better base to work off

we can never have too many, can we ?

hi ozace
thanks for the link , yes the 23 is great to see , i will order one when they are in stock again , i was looking for the frame set , wondering which one it would be , and finally saw the T-rex 90 project , very cool , thanks , dana

hi Eyefly

thanks , i can only speak for myself , but i would love to be able to offer a kit , this has been talked about earlier in the thread , but i am serious about putting some time on the machine and see how it holds up , before i promise anything

i know people want it yesterday , but i figure it is better to find out problems before kits are out , also please realize it is still just in the early stages of development , a couple of models are together and flying , but i am sure a lot will be learned from these two machines and , people will be much happier if we work out the kinks first , and offer kits later

one thing i am excited about , having had a chance to fly mine , is a 50 sized gasser is super cool , it is only a few pounds lighter than a standard gasser , but it seems way lighter to me , and the G-20 ei is a great little engine , dana

I understand perfectly. Take your time and put out something of quality. Just keep in mind that you have at least one more party interested in a conversion. I would still love to see a video.

Original Axial distance 170/25 is how much??
With Zenoah 20cc where is 170/27 will be??

Look guys my estimites please:
170/25 Axial distance 69
170/21 ...............67
Anyway whe we always play here with pinion what seems to be difficould to make? Why not to resize main gear?
Original:
170/21 axial distance 67
My idea:
176/21 axial distance 69
There is lots companies who are able to make teh simple main gear using derlin material like Vario does...

hi myheligasser

let me say , i am not familiar with axial distance , but hopfully , you can follow my information on ratios

to start , the stock gearing is 170/20 for a ratio of 8.5

going to 25 tooth pinion would be 170/25 for a ratio 0f 6.8

i do not follow you that a 176/21 would be good , as i see it has a ratio of 176/21 or 8.3

in order to use the stock 20 tooth pinion , and change the maingear you would need to have a 136 tooth main gear produced , 136/20 = 6.8 , HTH , dana

I think he is asking about the distance from center to the teeth, in reference to how much room you have to move the motor for correct mesh...?? Eh..sound right?

To simply redraw the gear with the right amount of teeth, keeping the same axial distance, would change the pitch of the gears, no ?

Sorry, this got me thinking instead of watching.

hi Mike

here is a link on axial distance

http://www.evigem.org/index.php?id=396&no_cache=1

in looking at this , one thing i find interesting , and i think it is worth bringing up , if one were to change from a 8.5 to a 6.8 ratio , first using just the pinion , and second using just the main gear

by changing the gearing with the pinion , the 20 tooth pinion has a radius of about 7.7mm

the 25 tooth pinion has a radius of about 9.45mm

this is a change of 1.75mm

so if you were to slot the frames to accomodate both ratios , the slots would only need to be long enough to allow for 1.75mm of adjustment

by changing the gearing with the maingear the 170 tooth main has a radius of about 59.5mm

the 136 tooth main would have a radius of about 47.6mm

this would be a change of 11.9mm

in this case you can see if you wanted to accomodate both ratios , the slots would have to allow for 11.9mm of adjustment

i honestly still don't see the advantage of using the main gear over changing the ratio with the pinion

another problem this would introduce , by decreasing the diameter of the main gear you are increasing the loading on its teeth , this might not be a problem with a 1.0 mod gear , but i worry it would be a problem with 0.7 mod teeth

also one of the nice features of the stock 600 main gear is that it is a large diameter gear , i think this contributes to smoother power transfer and longer life for the maingear

hope this makes sense , dana

bosshoss - yes that was my basic idea. Sorry my mistake there, in last line should be 136
copperclad - IMHO the smaller diameter is not problem at all. Using derlin like lot other companies does, will help for sure. Look to the originall frames please. To move the engine closer to main shaft will be easier than to oposite direction. Anyway, the main question here now is: Why is the discusion came to light on this matter? Nobody can find situable 27T pinion for such long time... Look the threat how many people have try that... The only and only 23 in your link is still week and unsufficient winner... I would love to test both options to find out which way is better for us.
Paul

progress report

hi

i made it out to the field today , first time since i got back from vacation

i only got a tank in , but i am grinning from ear to ear , i have to say starting it today was a dream , the remote kill and electronic ignition are great , i started it with a thumb over the intake prime , and three pulls like you expect , then thought it was running a bit fast for idle , so i killed it and reset the subtrim on the throttle , then one light pull and it is ticking over again , this time flying it i had time to look it over in the air carefully , and could see by the fuel that it is running smoothly , i am hoping i can get out tomorrow too , it is really looking like it is going to handle the engine fine and it flies light , i am totally jazzed , cheers , dana
