Glad you are back Copper, hope you feel better soon. You probably have a rash on your hands because you were without a radio in your hands for too long

Dana, I dont believe the Trex is built well enough to cope with the 20cc motor. Trully, is there some problem?? My T600N sitting here on the shelf waiting for your conversion 2 months Flying season here ! Glad you are back!!

Dana:
It has been nice to talk with you about you conversion as we can share our info and have and end result of a 50 size gasser that will do all of the things we want. You mentioned you want a sport flyer I am looking for a good scale platform and of corse all of the 3D guys want performance. I think this platform will give us all we want but it will take a little more work to finalize a design that can be an upgrade kit that does not have alot of extra components you have to buy and modify to complete the conversion. I chose to go with the std. fan and clutch and at this point it is working OK as Dana is using a much more robust fan and clutch and so far he has had very good luck with his setup. I have about 20 or 30 flights on my design at this point and am waiting for the new 27 tooth gears to arrive. This will help with the head speed and put the engine IMO at a more happy RPM. Testing will go on, Looks great at this point.

It’s good to see another version with different ideas, I must admit I didn’t think the standard fan and clutch would stand up but it sounds like its doing fine in yours.
The more standard parts used the more attractable it becomes and also more marketable but I still like Dana’s idea using the Predator fan and 90 clutch but if the standard setup stands up to 3D then it will be better all round
It looks great by the way.

hi Jack
thank you for posting your photos , i know everyone will enjoy them as much as i have , i hope you are ready for a barrage of questions , i have spent a lot of time pouring over them and it is a real treat to get to see your work , your workmanship is beautiful , i am glad to see we have both taken slightly different routes as we will together be able to cover a lot more ground and get to the bottom of this conversion , or perhaps help someone else to , i am still recovering from my vacation/cold and have not gotten a chance to fly more yet , you know that old adage that a good husband listens to his wife , and lives to fly another day , thanks again , dana

Sounds like you need a vacation from your vacation!

I don't know about you, but if I just got back from walking around on the equator looking at some sights with the wife, the first thing I'd wanna do when I got back is take my helis and high tail it to the field...!

WOW those pics really caught me off guard, I did not know that there was another gasser conversion going on, this is great! A few questions:

Are those fiberglass frames?
Are they modified from stock? (I see the unused servo mounting spots)
What gears ratio are you using?
What headspeed do you get now?
What engine is that?
Did you modify the fan and clutch?
What is the flying weight?

I only have about 100 more, but I will wait to see if some are answered in your next post

Just a suggestion....

Now that the foundation has been set, maybe JMD should start a thread of his own so as not to hijack Dana's thread....

I don't say that in a negative way..... I too would like to hear more details.....but if kept here, it may become confusing and "cluttered".......

Anyone agree ??

Hey JMD,

Awesome work! I like the cyclic bellcranks for starters! Is the tail servo on the left frame, at the back?

Could it be possible that the clutch and fan are holding only because you are not aggressively pushing the machine through 3D?

Thanks for doing that Copper, this is ALL great info. I am sure I am not alone in thinking that you are really moving this hobby forward with your efforts. A lot of us are on the edge of our seats waiting to see how it all works out, kinda like a really good movie with a very happy ending!

hi Invrted1

thanks , i know there are a bunch of people that want kits , and i am thinking there are other people just kinda hanging on the fence about starting their own conversions ( like the R-90 conversions )

and i am seeing that with Jack's and my projects both posted it will help get other conversions started , and with working this out , it's both old sayings , "three or four heads are better than one" , and my favorite , "spread the guilt , and the punishment will be less severe"

i know that with trading notes with Jack over the last few days , we have both learned a lot , i know i mentioned it before , but it is great to see Jack took a different tack , and between the two of us we are covering way more ground , than one person could have managed alone , cheers , dana

No problem, Dana..... I was hoping my post didn't sound "offensive".....

I surely would like to see more than just a couple of pics from JMD.... I'm sure his machine didn't just "fall together"...... What I would like to see is more of a detailed , step by step process such as the excellent writeup that you've done......

But clearly, that belongs on a thread of its own.....

hi Juan
not at all , i could see where you were comming from and thought i should jump in and explain , it was more my bad than Jack's
he will get hit with a million and six questions for sure , i know i have about a thousand or so , i know if he starts a thread on it , i will be one of the first subscribers , dana

I have been watching the 90 conversions, but, Copperclad, this is really the cat's whiskers.

Watching closely, and if you decide to kit or package the harder to fab bits, I will be a customer.

now , just back to the lurking, there are a lot of eyes on this thread.

Not that there is any pressure or anything....this is about having fun while being innovative.

Hi Envrted1

I will try to answer all of your questions in time

The frame is G10 for my test model. I used all of the std. parts fan and clutch from the T rex 600 with only a modification to the fan hub were it mounts to the engine. The unused survo mount has been removed as I was trying to make a frame that could be setup two different ways for ccpm. I have droped this idea as it was based on my wanting to use this modification for scale but is was not nessisary. The gear ratio at this point is std. 8.5 - 1 I amd wanting to change this to 6.28 - 1 this will put the engine in its happy place and allow us to hav the 1800 2000 head speed you guys want. The survo on the back on the right side is the thro. and on the other side is tail controle. I placed them to use the original parts for the T rex 600 tail survo just use the front pushrod for thro. and the tail pushrod clips on the rear survo direct. The engine is the same Dana is using the Zanoha G20 ei.

Today I flew the heli again as I have about 25 flights to this point. most of my flying has been working with different head speeds and engine RPM to see were it seems happy. I have also been monitoring the engine temps at different RPMs to see what works and test how the fan is working. My flying today was all out high speed clims and passes and even with the head speed low at this point 1300 to 1400 because of the current gear ratio, it performed great. The temps threw all of this was 185 to 210 witch is very good for gas engine. I am in the process of instaling my new upgraded frames as I changed the engine mount slightly and the lower mount plate will be 2mm carbon for beter engine support. The G10 was 1.5mm and had a little to much flex. Total flying weight is just under 9.5 lbs.

Also note the std fuel tank runs about 30 min.+ my fingers fall asleep !!!

On goes the testing and still waiting for the new 27 tooth gears.

Copperlad said 25 you say 27. Which one is right? Seems to be big problem to find suplier for module 0,7 25 or 27 tooth gears ??

25 or 27 tooth whoes to say we need to try them and see what works the best. I chose 27 because most gassers use a 6.28 - 1 ratio. Also depends if you want this machine to fly 3D or Sport. I am looking for scale and the std. pinion will work fine for this because I use flybarless heads with weighted blades and will probobly run about 1300 head speed. The only reason I Im trying these other ratios is for the 3D guys that want performance. We will see what works and go from there.

We should just be greatfull that Dana and Jack are taking the time to try these options, like Jack says he could manage fine with present setup.
