Aerial Photography and Video > Traveling with--600 and 800 size AP ships??

I wonder how some of you guys travel to jobs on planes with the 800 and 600 size AP heli??

Is there anyone making solid and lightweight traveling cases for the my --trex is 46"Lx17"Hx10"W And my 800 is 60"Lx25"hx13"w?

Or do you guys break them down and put on a smaller case? I notice the 600 is pretty easy to break the boom and mount, but the vario gasser is very hard to take out the tail.

I know that cargos on plane get toss like garbage, one of my friend suggest it's better to ship Fedex with insurance. What are your thoughts.

I think if there's a super size cooler will be perfect with some padding.

I have seem the huge box that Flyingcam uses for their heli, looks super huge.

I have always shipped it fedex with insurance. The way i see it if its damaged during transport via fedex im covered, if it was damaged in the cargo hold of a plane that i am on then i am not covered

Good to hear some are doing Fedex.

Also when heli in the extreme cold temp when ship on the plane, will that damage belts and other plastic parts?

I know, I can fit the 600 in a carry on suit case when it's break down. But do you think they will let it on board as carry on? I have done it many time with the 450, but the blades and boom of the 600 just seem to so much more lethal.

trex 600 will not fit carry on luggage, i have tried. The boom is too long and they said nope, needs to go down below. I have traveled many times with my trex450 as carry on, but its a no go for the larger birds. TSA also is now cracking down on what can be brought on board, i think they recently stated that no RC toys are allowed on board now.

I travel with mine weekly. As you know there is a lot of stuff you have to bring. All of our gear checks on as luggage standard size.
Find out the maximum size allowed by the airlines as a starting point. We built a wooden crate to fit the maxijoker. Head, blades and gear comes off. It sits in foam cut out to fit it and plenty of room for the head blade and gear. Its kind of sandwiched in with the top foam which holds it secure but provides shock protection. Camera mount has its own crate as well, the rest is in cases in suitcases.
Yes the lid is screwed on but we make sure the crates clear TSA first and we have a screw gun in the last bag to be checked. Its not fancy but has worked well for over a 100 trips. There are cases out there but they seem to be pretty pricy espically to Hawaii. Pm me with your email and I can send a pic or 2 if you like.

Jeff,
I just had some Anton B Bricks rejected by TSA on my way to Atlanta via Delta. The lithium content of the Batteries exceeded the allowed % limit. I had to send them back with my wife and rent batteries in GA.

FYI they have approx half the LC of my Vario's packs.

regaards,
Ant

What size were the Anton pack(s)?

Here is something I dug up:
http://www.antonbauer.com/trans_notice_dionic160.htm

Funny thing is I remember researching the 8g/25g limitation a few years back for air travel and freight, but now that it is in the spotlight things have changed a bit.

Cheers,
Jeff

As far as they could tell me, they use a mfg. list.....wah wah

I'd guess that if your batts aen't listed you'd have no chance of getting them on the plane.

These Jokers are running 710mm blades. Since I don't use landing gear they fit without having to remove anything. This pic was taken after first trial fit, I still have to mount them etc..... One flybar paddle will have to be removed and the one with the HC profi will be flybarless.

One of the main reasons I converted to flybarless as well was ease of packing/shipping.

Art, the lipo/mfg restrictions are horrible. It will definitely affect the way some of us do travelling via air.

Jeff,
The batts where D160's that they made me send back along with my Armatos Pro battery belt. However, they allowed my 90 watt switronixs. Additionally they wont let you check-in any spare batteries.
So if your Maxi's main pack is listed and contains less than the max of 25g of lithium content you may be able to get it on with it installed. But no backup/spares would be allowed.

Here's a link to the 2008 regulation advisory.

Maybe I should have been allowed to take the AB's on? But do you think it wise to arque with the TSA. Maybe Newark is also a little stricter because it's Newark?

Again, my intentions where not to hijack a thread but merely to inform.

Regards,
Anthony
