I am just about ready to convert the ol' HKB2 to brushless and it seems that many of you use the 300HDX motor. Sounds good to me but which one, there are several versions.

Here

I am assuming that I want a 2.3mm shaft version, right? Maybe the 4200 version?

Thanks.

scroll down the bottom of helidirect page there is a 2.3mm shaft 300hdx3800rpm lots of power and speed need a 9 or 10t pinion and all the connectors and the esc and its connectors or go to jaghobbies and get the combo ready to fly. thats the simplest solution I have the 300hdx3800 and love it on 10t pinion its all that little heli needs to fly great.

Ok that answers that question. Now I know that some of you use the Dynam 30A and others use the ELE 30A speed controller. Anyone use the HobbyWing Pentium 25A? If I was going to choose one ... any ideas? Does it really matter?

No, doesn't really matter, whatever you like best or can afford. I've got two of the HDX motors, one is running on a stock eFlite ESC which I think is only 18A. The one in the HBK2 is using a 20A if I remember right...

I learned to fly on a Trex, I learned to crash on a Blade CP...

I like my CC Phoenix 35, but its a bit more expensive. I've used the 25 amp version of the Phoenix ESC in planes for a long time. I like the Heli governor mode for the throttle. Seems to do a good job in keeping the headspeed steady.

I read that someone reprogrammed theirs so it plays the first few bars of the "Stars and Stripes" when it initialized.

I ended up getting the Dynam one cause it was the well ... cause I just got it. I don't really have a good reason but it was a few bucks cheaper than the ELE so that was part of it.

I got the ele cause it was 30Amps so it will run cooler than a 25 or less. I work in electronics so thats one thing I kinda had an overkill on.

I did get the Dynam 30A. I too care about how much I am working electronics. I have been a computer geek for a long time and heat is always an issue there. So I am always adjusting my choices with that in mind.

I got the Ele because Tryan did. Plus I agree with him on the oversizing comments. It used to be that everything was rated at 50% capacity. Now with all the offshoring and price conscience consumers every is rated at exactly what the device is capable of. With the sloppy tolorances in devices that means some will underperform which means the overhead needs to be included in the purchase selection not the device rating.

The ELE is fine, doesn't get all that warm and makes cute sounds. However, the programming instructions on ELE's site as well the instructions that HD sends are incorrect. ELE was kind enough to provide them to me via email. I didn't try the new instructions because the feature I wanted to set (freq) was not included in the new instructions. ELE tech support told me that I need to purchase the Pro-card to make that change. The Pro-card is not currently available in the states. The ELE 30a runs 8k with an option to switch to 16k. Its hard to find out how the freq setting actually affects the helli. I was trying to smooth out the motor response and thought it might be interesting to try as some nicer ESCs run slightly higher frequencies. As I recall CC is something like 12k. Esky doesn't publish the freq of thier escs.

If you mount the ele to the bottom of the heli you can land in the snow to cool it.

I got my 300HDX 3800 motor today and man it is cute. I have not mounted it yet because I am waiting on an adapter but I did pull the old motor and compare it to the new one. I thought I would post some pics for the other newbies, as I haven't seen them compared side-by-side yet.

Also here is the Dynam 30A ESC compared to my toasted stocker.

So I got to thinking and it would seem that I don't know how to wire my new motor to my new ESC. I looked at the instructions and it just says connect them together. But how? All the motor wires on the ESC are the same color and there is no diagram on how to hook them up. I see that the ELE and Hobbywings are the same way. So my question is simple, which ESC wire goes to which colored motor wire?

Don't matter. Hook them up and if the motor turns the wrong way just switch any two. Sounds odd I know, but it show you do it.

If your soldering and not using connectors just do a temp setup until you find the right sequence - then label and make the permanent connections afterwards.

Make sure you get the battery polarity right. That one DOES matter.

Bought the same setup when I had to. I also spent the extra bucks to buy the program card for it. Was really simple. I got lucky and got the motor connection right on the first shot (dumb luck). I've been really happy with mine thus far. It is truely remarkable the difference in power bewteen the two motors. Let me know how the adapter plate works out. I had to mod the frame some to get it to fit. I have a spare upper frame, so when it breaks I might just go with the adapter plate in mine.
