| After hunting around for the proper pinion for my Hornet and not having the patience to mailorder. I decided to use a slot-car pinion from the LHS (readily availible with a great selection in tooth count and materials). The only problem was that the maingear on the Hornet is a metric tooth and the slot-car pinion is an SAE tooth. Also the Hacker output shaft is too large by .02". After talking to one of the local slot-car pros, he suggested to lap-in the gear.
What you do is set up the mesh the same as you would with the proper gear so it has the proper backlash. Get some rubbing compound and smear it on the teeth. Run the motor through a couple of charges. You may need to reapply the rubbing compound a few times as it gets slung off all over the heli. Clean up the gears and heli to remove all the rubbing compound and you're all set.
I should mention that I turned the output shaft of my Hacker motor down by .02" to fit the standard slot-car pinion.
I now have an SAE maingear that runs nice and quiet and I have the option of going to a 9 tooth pinion if I decide to.
