50mph Heliman Location: Tacoma, WA
| OK, I’ll be the one to start this. Until recently, maybe the last few or appearances at the field things are getting different. My saying different = UNSAFE. I know we are not an organized club, but we have always been really good at safety and making sure we follow what others have requested or recommended at the field. So why it is some are flying in an area we all agreed to be the NO FLYING AREA.
An example: I was on the other side, where I fly my planes. There were others, new people to the field there. I did the typical, hey, what Frequency, and we all here take turns flying. Like when a Heli from the other side if up and flying around, wait till they are finished or stay on this side, and fly high. Well that didn’t work out to well. So we had a Heli and a plane flying. Maybe it was safe; I didn’t see anything really come close. Well I was sitting in my chair watching them fly. I will never understand why a TREX 600 was beyond the Baseball Backstop and over the cement near where I was sitting. I was in the shade enjoying the flying until this TREX 600 was approaching in my direction and was almost over the top of me. To me that was very unsafe and really caused me to wonder why this was happening. Flying that far away isn’t smart and as we all know very un safe.
So what are we doing? Again I understand we normally all just get along and share what little space there is in that field.
I will say this, if that would have come above me again I was prepared to launch something and see what happens. But because I understand me doing that would also be wrong and un safe, I would have maybe just tossed a rock up at the flying Heli.
Now about this flight line. Technically everyone flying in that field falls under or should apply the rules established by AMA. You don’t have to be a member to follow the rules; every model purchased has these rules listed in the manual and points out these guidelines very clear. The flight line is for flying, not standing in while flying. The flight line does not stretch from the north end to the south end. It is directly in front of where observers who want to watch everyone fly and remain in a safe place. We also have the pit area All the tables lined up and displaying everyone’s models. We have agreed that we don’t want anyone flying outside the flight line, or in the pit area. Some say Hovering/Testing isn’t flying. I don’t see a problem as long as they are away from the tables and off to the side.
Last words, Lets just try our best to be safe and lookout for each other while we are at the field.
