Do we need them? if so, what should we check and which are the best?

I found some at Harbor Freight for $10 that work as well as my expensive units. I was able to detect and solve a problem with my gear ratio in an electric heli. I also monitor ESC, batt, and motor temps with it. Very handy little things.

If you use electric heli, you should have one, for bat and motor temp info. for nitro I don't use mine.

I wish I could fly 24/7

I don't see any need to have one for heli's. For my electrics I use a good enough motor and ESC that I can keep my hand on them indefinitely after a flight. For my LiPo's I go by the same principal... not too hot to hold.

For nitro I just use the finger-on-the-backplate test, and tune it so I can almost keep my finger on it indefinitely.
