Hello guys,

This heli has some serious grunt! First half of the video is with the TP Extreme 4500's, second half is with the latest 3850 V2. The V2's provide a lighter and nimbler setup. This is one crazy 3D machine. Hope you enjoy.

Nice flying, but I have to be honest and say that the Ion-X2 doesn't seem to fly any differently than the original.

They appear to be equally capable machines.

Chachin,

Some very nice flying! I would be interested to know some more specifics about your machine. What are you using for MR/TR blades, gear ratios, speed control, cooling, RX power, servos, radio gear, etc. Any chance you could list the hardware you are using? I would also be interested to know your all up weight.

Thanks much in advance,
Spironi

Thanks guys, the machine is flying better than ever on the 12S power system. Here is the current setup Siproni:

> Ion-X2 upgrade
> Neumotor 1521-1.5Y
> Kontronik PowerJazz running at 75% governor
> 12S TP 3850 Extreme V2 (my favorite) and 12S 4500 Extremes (work great too)
> Gear ratio: 21.56:1 running 100t double-stacked main gear and 17t motor pulley (to avoid using 16t pulley; harder on belt).
> 690mm V-blades V2 for mains
> 95mm V-blades for the tail
> MA white 3D paddles
> Futaba S9252 digital servos for cyclic
> Futaba GY-611/S9256 for tail
> Duralite 5.1v regulator with 2S TP 2100mAh ProLite pack
> DX7 radio with AR7000 Rx

There is still room for improvement in this machine. I have a new set of 690mm V-blades TST edition to try out. I hear they are more efficient. I'm also planning on trying an Actro32-3 with 6mm shaft which should drop some additional weight in gearing/pulleys. Thinking of trying out 13S 3850 V2's with the Actro later on. I'd also like to try some faster cyclic servos on higher voltage.

My scale is not accurate enough for a solid figure (will get a better one). It's somewhere around 11 lb ready to fly. I think it is slightly over that with the 4500's and under that with the 3850's but will have to verify this with a proper scale.

Chachin,

Thanks for the reply. Looks like quite a machine! What are your thoughts on the Neumotor 1521-1.5Y vs. the Actro 32-3? I have been quietly reading through some of your old posts on the Ion, such as your X2 conversion. Thanks for all of the great info and quality pictures.

I have been flying a Raptor 90 for a few years now but have been thinking of going electric. The Ion-X2 has certainly caught my eye. I also do some aerial photography and am interested in the reduced noise and no smoke. Longer run times and LOTS of payload capacity are of keen interest to me with the photography gear. I was thinking of running the TP 5000 V2's in 12S. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the excellent documentation of your work,
Spiro

I'm glad to hear the X2 conversion thread has been useful .

Unfortunately I have yet to try an Actro32-3 for comparison, but I'm getting ready to order one in the next few weeks. The reason I want to try this motor is because it is lighter, 6mm shaft is available, and it saves gear/pulley weight due to the much lower Kv, this also means a larger motor pulley can be used for more tooth contact along the belt. I still need to fly it to find out how cool it runs, how much power it delivers, flight times, etc... My Neu1521/1.5Y lands very cool, in the 130+ F range. It should get hotter in the summer though.

If I had to setup my Ion-X2 for AP then I would probably go with 10S 5000 Extreme V2. The 12S 5000's will potentially create a nose-heavy condition which may need to be corrected by adding "more" weight towards the rear/tail of the model (although shifting your AP gear further back may do the trick). OTOH, 10S is less batt weight to begin with and can be made to balance spot on or with a bit of nose-down tendency. 10S should still have plenty of power to lift some weight coupled with some flat bottomed blades. I think MA has setup some AP Ions for their customers and may be able to advice you better. Either way good luck and hope you keep us posted.

Thanks again Chachin. My payload CG is very adjustable, so I am quite sure I could dial in any conceivable battery configuration. I will contact MA and ask them about AP ION suggestions to get their input.

Thanks again for the advice, and I will let you know what we end up doing.

Chachin,

What are you using to charge and balance your 12S packs? I assume you have 2 6S packs in series?

Hello Spiro, yes two 6S packs in series.

For chargers I have a couple of Orbits and a TP-1010C (recommended!). For balancing I use two TP-210 balancers. I'm planning on ordering another TP-1010C charger and a couple more TP balancers for even shorter charging/balancing time.
