| This is a log of my project to fit a Toys R Us plastic toy Hughes 500 onto a Hawk Sport helicopter. This has been done by others before me, but interest from other modelers persuaded me to document my project.
The fuselage is a plastic toy, which comes mostly assembled, painted and detailed. It's made in a couple different versions, and available at Toys R Us toy stores or online.
There are 4 versions, 3 of which are available on the 21st Century Toys Online page.
Police - $30

A few videos of a completed heli - I'm sorry but I can remember exactly who's model this is... Michael someone I think, so if this is your model, speak up and take credit. (right-click and save-as to view)

This looked cool, so I ordered the Ultimate Soldier toy copter direct from 21st Century Toys online. I bought the Vietnam Air Cavalry Helicopter - only $35 + $10 shipping.

I plan to put a Hawk Sport into it, since Hawk mechanics apparently fit the best. The detail on this toy is pretty neat - rivets, panel lines, etc. I've already lightened some of it, and the body, minus the cockpit, rotorhead, tail rotor, tail boom webbing, and some other bulkheads, weighs 2.8 pounds. There is more weight to lose, though. I imagine that it will fly better with a 46 than a 32. I think I'll try it with a 32 first.
This is the model, assembled as supplied.
Above are the parts I plan to use.
These are the parts I've removed and don't plan to use.
A picture of the body with an OS 32 for size comparison. I don't plan to use this recoil start OS 32, just the regular 32.
Plenty of room inside, and more webbing to dremel out.
I've already dremeled the webbing inside the boom halves.
A preliminary weigh-in. The scale reads 2.8 pounds. So far all I've done is remove the cockpit, bulkheads, and rotors leaving me with the body parts that I'll use. I've lightened the boom, but still have more weight to lose in the main body section.
Now I need to order the Hawk Sport and see how this is going to shape up. I'm curious to see for myself what a $160 heli can offer. |
