Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > Hobbyparts Conversion - Acrobatic

Hi

I have found this machine a really good conversion, the only critisim i have is the fuel caps, if you accidently overtighten them they leak like anything, i found they would be fine for a few months and then all of a sudden i would go into the workshop one day and find a nice pool of fuel everywhere.

And once one leaks it seems the other starts as well, well i have tried many things, Plumbers tape, metal Hose clips, and nothing worked all it did was distort the lid,

the problem seems to be the fuel tank lid goes through the base plate, so you loose 1 or 2mm of screwing thread, and if you over tighten you've had it.

I was left with 2 options,

1 - turn the fuel tanks up the right way, which would require re-plumbing and draining the entire fuel system

2 - order new caps and fuel tanks and make the hole bigger in the base plate so the cap fits through it and can be screwed up the extra 2 turns.

well i found a solution last night, Coolpower fuel caps, they are taller, and they have an inner part - a second lid within a lid, well i have tighten them up really tight and so far after 2 days no fuel leaks, i have left half a tank of fuel in each to test.

I thought it may help others who may have experienced this problem.
it is only a minor critism on what is a good conversion.

Hi Matt,

How about turning the tanks the correct way up and cutting the cap necks off and fitting these? Al's Hobbies sell them.

The drive belt is very close to the caps on the XLV I noticed also!

HP conversion.

I am surprised you do not use spring clips on the tygon fuel lines.

How does the klunk function when the tank is inverted?

Matt

Maybe the seals on the inside of the standard caps are getting old. I do not have leaks on mine.

Bob,

I am using some M5 brass fittings that I purchased along with the aluminium cap seal [I had to drill & tap the M5 holes in the cap] The tygon tube is a VERY tight fit over the fittings. But may still fit the clips as you suggest as insurance.

My tanks are not inverted, and I don't intend inverting them in flight as it's a big XLV!!! The clunk functions in exactly the same way with the black flexable silicon tubes to the bottom of the tanks/clunks.

Matt - I'm just in the process of replacing the stock tanks on my XLV after having trouble keeping a bit of turbine oil from seeping out past the sealing on the threaded clunk line fittings. Didn't affect the heli's performance, just made a bit of a mess

I'm just chucking a couple of Du-Bro 1.5L tanks in their place so I can fly a bit longer without any leakage. These fit pretty neatly (on their sides) in the same general location as the stock tanks but are a bit longer. I'm still messing with the securing of them but industrial velcro tape (permanent bond) is currently looking good for a strong, no fuss fixing method

hi Cool

good to hear from you, can you post up the pic of the tanks or send a link to where you got them from ?

i am fed up of clearing up fuel, my summer house stinks like a hangar,
i thought i had cracked it with the coolpower caps, it seems to have worked,

what i have done as an added protection is to ensure the side tanks are empty, i only leave fuel in the header tank.

Matt

Are complaining about the smell of jet fuel in your summer house?

Seems John has mastered the problem. Maybe you need a jetway?

Yep I drain my helis tanks after flying anyway - more of a habit than anything else though probably!

The tanks I am/will be using are the part number 692 50oz Dubro tanks. See the catalogue HERE . As you can see they do a decent range of sizes! I just got them from Motors and Rotors.

They aren't as neat looking as the festo fittings etc. on the original tanks but they do include all the parts to convert them to petrol/Jet fuel (rubber bung and Tygon cluck line) as well as the standard glow fuel parts. We'll have to wait until they've got a few fills through them (my fueller pump can be a bit too powerful sometimes when fully charged!) and see how they hold up...

Just an update to my post above. I've gone through 5 or 6 fill and drain cycles on the new Dubro tanks now and they are 100% leak free. This is even at the high fuel pressure during filling from the JM fueler so much much higher (and lower) than it would ever be in flight. Much better sealed than the stock tanks, even though they don't fit quite as neatly. Tanks are attached with heavy duty (permanent) self-adhesive Velcro on the base plate and the side-frames. This is extremely secure even with full tanks. C of G with full tanks is unchanged despite the fuel load being moved aft by a couple of inches.

A couple of quick pics....

Hehe, yep, the Dubros are still working well and the Velcro seems to be holding up solidly too, which is a bit of a surprise!

Flight times are going to be about another 8-10 mins longer than the original tanks but I've not managed to do a full to empty test flight yet to get the absolute real endurance (due to an annoying glitch which seems to have appeared since the rebuild ). I've test hovered to 16 minutes though which is promising

Matt,
Do your fuel caps still leak? Apparently if you change the fuel tank caps to the green or blue milk carton lids you will never have a problem again, or so I'm told.

Hi Phil

yes they still pee fuel all over the place, i did change them to the green milk bottle caps and they worked for a couple of weeks, but they started dripping again, all be it very slowly, i just have to remember to remove any fuel left in the tanks.. and they are fine...

Good idea that was..

Hej

I blocked my tanks inside the opposed neck with a plate and epoxyed it from inside and outside (capside)

No spill ever and then I sanded the caps 2 mm to clear the belt !

Then I fix to small problems
