Anyone know the max safe headspeed for these little helis?
I'm at 2400 but have the headroom to go considerably higher. Don't want to turn the head to shrapnel though.

That is a VERY GOOD question Jerry. Nobody really seems to know for sure what the MAX headspeed is. I have never been able to blow a plastic head apart with high headspeed but I have managed to RIP woodies out of blade grips before. I would LOVE to set up an R and D lab and find out thru testing and findings to determine the actual max of everything.

You know how fast you were running when the woodies and grips parted company?

It had to be 3000 or there abouts. At 2400 I think you are safe Jerry. My personality is kind of loosy goosy, I will try almost anything. That may or may not be a good thing. I probably shouldn't even post at all, I am a Bad influence at times. I ran a 13 tooth pinion with a plastic head for a while and it Did not blow apart. I do what I do but I don't recommend doing what I do. I have seen guys running 4000 headspeed with CNC. There are upper limits to everything, I just dont know what the MAX limits are.

Yea, I figure I'm safe. Thought about running it up to 2800 and leaving it there though - bet it'll be nice and stable at that speed. I did have it up to 3300 today before I tached it and realized how fast it was going. The sound sorta made me want to get behind something in case it let go.

are you guys actually measuring or guessing with the calculators? Mine calculates at 2950rpm but its not that fast. 2500rpm calculated headspeed is perfect for the king I started with an 8t which calculated around 2000 and it was to slow it flew but was sluggish not the response I was used to coming from the BCPP.

I'm measuring using a tach I had for my plank engines. Takes me a bit of nerve to get it close enough to the rotor disc though.

whats your setup Im curious about what Im spinning. Im to cheap to buy a guage especially the plane ones say yo have to be at 12". And did you go idle up and check full throttle at 0 pitch or where was your throttle.

Im using a 300HDX3800rpm on 10t.

Nobody Freakin Knows Tryan. I don't have a tach so I don't know. Rick says 3000 is good for plastic and has no problems, does Rick have a tach, I don't freakin know. I trust Rick, He has several different helis and knows stuff, but it seems as though no one really knows the REAL MAX headspeed of anything.

Im just gonna get PO'ed one of these days and order a good tach just because I can. This stuff comes up all the time but nobody has ever given a defined tested answer. with different setups and different motors.

Please excuse me I am from the SHOW-ME-STATE.

I have the justgofly.com 400DH outrunner with a 9 tooth pinion. Actually it's the pinion off the stock brushed motor that I just drilled out to fit the outrunner's shaft. Pitch was at maybe 4* or so because the heli was just about to lift off so the motor was feeling some load. I had 3300 rpm with the throttle set to 80%, so I figure I could squeeze 3500 - 3750 full out. I'm getting 2400 rpm at abut 65%.

I have to get within 3" or so with my tach. As mentioned - I have to get my nerve up, especially with the heli getting light on the skids while I'm trying to measure. I envison my wrist getting whacked by a blade and then the heli tipping over and whipping my butt - then I pray real hard that I get my hand out of the way before that happens.

I understand dang 3", I feel for your shortcummings. Thanks for those good numbers maybe I can see close to 2950 with my setup at 100% but I only go to 90%.

It just hit me...to save my digits I think from now on I'll just read the speed of the tail rotor and then do the math to get the speed of the head.
