i installed a new larger pinion for more punch but now my motor is super hott , shouldnt it be cooler with a larger gear , the motor is a little tight on the main gear would that be why its hot ??

what motor are you using? if stock, they run hot, go with an outrunner, as for the pinion and main gear, a smig of play, not tight fit
i suck at this, but having the time of my life with it!

Turner , What are you running for a motor ?? An outrunner, an inrunner ?? A larger pinion will force the motor to work harder and will make some motors hotter as well. Gear mesh or belt tension too tight will also make your motor work harder.

On the subject of temps - Harbor Freight has an non-contact "point and read" thermo for $7.00. It goes to 230* F:
I have the 2nd one and it works well. Handy to have around the house for other stuff other than heli motors too.

Turner, Its been My experience is that an inrunner ALWAYS runs hotter than an outrunner brushless. I am running an Esky 0006 outrunner and it is hardly luke warm after a 6 minute flight. Running too hot over time will weaken the magnets.

All inrunners run hot cause there in a can and will have less power to a small extent. But alot of us are running outrunners with a fan that runs real cool for $50 you can get a hot brushless with ESC its well worth it. If you are running a brushless inrunner you may be able to keep the esc if its rated high enough and just get a $25 outrunner. As far as pinions the faster you drive your car it doesnt burn less gas it burns more same thing goes for electric power.

I like the car analogy tryan. Here's another one turner. Lets say you have a manual transmission in your car and you want to go up a hill, you go up the hill in first gear and you are really not going up the hill that fast but your motor is not stressed out or overheating. You go up the same hill in second or third , you will go up the hill faster but WILL be putting more stress on the motor and its temp. will go up. Think of putting a larger pinion on your electric motor kind of like going from 1st gear to second gear.

that makes scense thanks ! the motor says its a outrunner but it looks like a inrunner . no outer moveing parts . strange ... thanks
