Main Discussion > One fine day; first inverted hover

I took the R60 out today and REALLY wrung it out! I even did my first inverted hover. Granted, I was several mistakes high and it only lasted about 15 seconds it was still so cool. I even managed it without a V-curve on the throttle mix. I'm getting good at stationary flips as well as loops. The R60 gets quite a bit of vertical as well before starting the 180 at the top for a stall turn. My rolls need improvement though. They start fine but after I go inverted and add negative pitch when I return upright I've lost all my forward momentum. Any one know of a cure for this?

I was one happy camper today

To say I am very pleased with my Raptor would be an overstatement.

Congrats jbrundt. Now, on your rolls you need to give a little back elevator while inverted to keep some forward momentum. Another thing that I learned from Jason Krause's(tipspeed) site is that you go up real high and put the heli on knife edge like a death spiral except you don't give it any elevator. As it drops, see if it starts to automatically pirouette along its lateral axis(like elevator input). Utilize the elevator trim to make it fall perfectly straight without pirouetting on its lateral axis and you'll have perfect trim which will help make rolls more straight and easier.

inverted flying

Hi Jeff

How did you manage flying inverted without a v-shaped throttle curve?

David....I dont get your mix. Could you explain a bit more.

Hi Jeff - same question... how do you maintain inverted without a V shaped throttle curve?? If you are flying in normal mode, that will kill your head speed while inverted and it will fall like a rock...

Well, to answer your questions about not having a 'V' shaped curve my 9VHP only allows a max of 75% throttle at low stick for either Idle up 1 or 2. This is plenty for hover on an R60 inverted. The throttle curve can then be fine tuned. So my throttle/pitch curve looks like this for Idle up 1:

Throttle Pitch
low 70% -9
1/4 58% 0
1/2 65% 6
3/4 75% 9
full 100% 11

(keep in mind a 9VHP has 12 point curves for pitch and throttle with each one adjustable independent of the other from 0-100%)

With the OS61 and Weston pipe I have way more power than I could have hoped for. I would like to have 100% throttle at low stick but this radio won't allow it. It came out before switchless inverted was popular. I have an invert switch but I inhibit it on the set up menu. I'm planning to add a GV-1 so I really won't have to worry about a throttle curve per se. I don't expect to hover inverted low to the ground with this set up but I'm also not worried either. When I am inverted in a loop and go full negative the R60 actually climbs.

I guess we all make do with what we have to work with. You'll see I'm hovering at half stick. I plan on tweaking this curve set up a bit so before you full blown 3D guys tell me how wrong this is i already know it. The plan is to go to -9, 0, +9. With 1/2 stick to be 0 and hover around 5/8 or 3/4 stick. I know I have way too much at the top end right now. One nice thing with the 9V is the hover pitch trim lever and the high pitch trim levers on either side of the Tx (near the top) theses allow even finer tuning. I'm getting about 1800 rpm at the 75% stick position.

9vhp v curve

Hi Jeff - Just a thought... What if you set your throttle servo travel too high, such that it would bind at a 100% setting, and then adjust your throttle curve down so that full stick = full carb open = 75% output on your TX?? Then you would have full throttle on the low end of your idle up 1 curve since the radio will only give a maximum of 75% out?

So the normal curve might look like

low stick = 10% throttle = 40% pitch
1/4 stick = 20% throttle = 50% pitch
1/2 stick = 30% throttle = 60% pitch
3/4 stick = 50% throttle = 80% pitch
full stick = 75% throttle = 100% pitch

And the idle up 1 curve might look like

low stick = 75% throttle = 0% pitch
1/4 stick = 65% throttle = 25% pitch
1/2 stick = 50% throttle = 50% pitch
3/4 stick = 65% throttle = 75% pitch
full stick = 75% throttle = 100% pitch

Would that work? Since the radio won't give you more than 75% throttle, make it so the carb is full open at the 75% setting. If you never ask for more than that it shouldn't bind up the linkage.

Also, have you ever used the 12 (!) points available on your throttle & pitch curves? Did it make a difference, good or bad??

Mix

OK, so what about this aileron to elevator mix...someone explain this please.

The aileron to elevator mix is utilized so as to keep forward speed during the roll without having to give it back elevator to keep it going forward during the roll.
