I am not new to Nitro engines - I have been into RC cars for the past few years. Now I know compression is a good thing, but it was almost impossible to start the stock Thunder Tiger .36 engine in my new Raptor 30. I am using a standard 12V hand bump starter w/ 6mm extension. The compression was so intense that I had to take out the glow plug and put about 20 drops of after run oil to provide lubrication. I let the oil work in w/o the glow plug and slowly tightened it up. After a few hours, this was the only method that worked. I got it started for a few seconds and called it quits for the night. Anyway, the compression was so great that the starter got so hot that I couldn't even hold it in my hand! This was because the engine was not moving past TDC until I gave it a lot of oil. My question is do you consider this normal and did anyone ever have this problem? If so, what worked? Thanks.

My knee jerk reaction was hydrolic lock, but when I took off the glow plug and turned the engine upside down, no fuel whatsoever dropped out. That's how I know hydrolic lock was out of the question. The problem seems to be dominishing by using after run oil, but still I agree that doesn't sound right. I took the Raptor to my lhs and they agreed that by hand the compression felt normal. But, the starter battery is, or was fully charged at the beginning and the hand starter was draining so much current since it was hard to turn over. Something does not make sense. Anyone else? Thanks.

The TT36 has unbelieveable compression, too much really and its probably one reason why many of them destroy themselves ie: main bearings going bad early on, breaking con rods, etc... I had one just like yours. You probably got a Fri. eng instead of a Monday eng. What I did on mine was to resort to using jumper cables from my car to my starter so it wouldnt run down, they do flood easy too. I finally got frustrated and removed it from my heli and bench ran it on a stand with a 9/6 prop. After almost a 1/2gal of glo it seemed partly run in, and I mean only partly. A tight TT36 will take forever to settle in as its non ringed and really tight. Be very careful not to run it too rich or too lean either way will ruin it fast. Too rich will not allow the metal to expand and stress will destroy the con rod, too lean and it will destroy the piston/liner and possibly crank and BBs. Its just easier to bench a gal on the sucker then it will start every time after that. Most will say to just hover it rich and baby the eng but its easier said than done on a super tight TT36 an OS is a different matter entirely. I always bench before installing, always and all my helis start with just a bump of the starter after a prime.Just bench it with some low nitro 10% then finish the last tank or two with the fuel that you ARE going to use to be sure its set properly and you will have no probs unless there is something wrong with your eng to start with like tolerances out of spec( piston/liner too tight), in which case nothing will help.
