how do you measure tail rotor pitch? instructions for setup on my CSM540 say to set the tail blades at 8 degrees pitch, i've been told just to set the rear pitch lever at 90 degrees to the boom, does that give you 8 degrees pitch?

Non-adjustable tail rotor

Howdy..

As far as I can see, tail rotor pitch is not adjustable. The linkage from the ball links on the tail rotor to the pitch-slider on the tail-drive axle is usually a fixed piece of plastic, no? So you can't adjust it that way.

On my nexus, I set it up with the linkage at 90 degrees to the tail-servo control wire, as per the instructions. When I flew it, this allowed far more left yaw than right. I had to trim 1/2 way right just to get the heli to stop rotating. I ended up moving the linkage back a little big. It's not perfect, because now there is a little more throw in one direction than in the other, but that's where it centeres with the trim in the middle.

Works for me. By the way, I'd perfom this check with the gyro bypassed, so that it isn't coloring the results. I had to re-trim slightly after I added the Gyro (telebee).

Regards

thats what i meant... the tail pitch lever. on a raptor, with it set at 90 degrees is that 8 degrees pitch?

If it's not adjustable, does it really matter how many degrees it is? Try to fly it at 90 degrees, and see if it needs adjusting.... Just my 2 cents.

I believe the Raptor has a built in degree measurement. When the arm is set at 90* the correct deflection is already set. The grips are made that way if I remember correctly.........

My motto is this..Fly...Rebuild...Fly

what do you mean its not adjustable, there all adjustable, with the lever at 90 degrees, no you cant adjust the grips seperate from that, what i want to know is, with it set at 90 degrees, is there 8 degrees of pitch to the blades? with the horrible ARF manuel that TT gives you, they dont tell you.. that i could find, my gyro says to set tail blades at 8 degrees of pitch, how do i measure that??

ok now im getting impatient!

a CSM gyro will go in almost any heli, for HH mode, CSM's instructions say to set tail blades at 8 degrees, how do i know that the blades are at 8 degrees pitch with the control lever at 90 degrees to the boom/linkage? it could be 6,7,9 or even 10 degrees of pitch.

With the lever at 90 degrees I used my blade pitch. I just drew a imaginary line through the tail rotor output shaft and measured approx. 8 degrees of pitch. I guess I have to repeat myself.

I don't think you need to measure it. I'd set it to 90, and then hover it. You'll know before the skids leave the ground if it's right on, or just close one way or the other. 90 degrees is the right place to start, and then adjust from there.

8 degrees is probably just an approximate amount, which changes as you increase torque, add forward flight, and such. That's why without HH, you need to add revo mixing, or with HH, the pitch is always being adjusted by the gyro as you add or decrease collective and forward speed.

People may disagree, but I'd set it to 90, and then try to hover it. Then you'll know whether you need to adjust it a little more or less either way.

Best of luck to you,

- Ben

thats where i have it set. at 90. not all helis may have 8 degrees. offset.

im trying to track down why my heli spins in circles, quite obviously the gyro is dead!

2 things about that:

1) Sorry if this is obvious, but make sure your Gyro isn't 'reversed'. Make sure when you turn your heli left (by hand, on the bench), the gyro moves the servo in the same direction as when you move the Tx lever to the right

2)Hover without the Gyro. At 90 degrees, with constant throttle, you should be able to keep the tail fairly steady with the stick near the middle. It's hard with no gyro, but it will tell you if the setting is close to being right.

Best of luck to you...

i got my raptor setup used.... went through it all got it suitable for some basic FF and took it around, i got into it for about 30 minutes, as i was about 2 feet off the ground hoving, ready to set it down, it started spinning in circles, i took it apart, nothing looks broke, a few people told me to disect it, they had similar probs. initially i though it was due to my batteries being low, that wasnt it, so i went through it all again, still does it. now im poking at horizon hobby to help me. im still screwing with the heli on and off trying to put a finger on it. too cold to test fly it.

So why were you asking if there was 8 degrees of pitch at 90 degrees on the lever, if you know the gyro is broken? Obviously the heli was flying fine before. Did you think the blade grips have suddenly shifted pitch?

Fold both tail blades back so they would hit each other at 0 pitch and measure between the ends of the blades. Set them about 1 1/4" apart and you'll be about where you need to be.

Proper Hover Pitch on R30

YS,

After setting up numerous Raptor 30’s for the local guys, and myself I have found you need to set the distance between the tailbox, and the Tail Pitch Control Slider = 10mm.

Just look at the raptor from the tail in, measure 10mm from the right hand side of the tail box, (around where the tail shaft exits the box), to the left hand edge of the Tail pitch control slider.

Since you have the manual here are the part numbers.

Page 12, step 13: #27 BK0047 [ R/H Tail Unit Housing ]
#21 BK0027 [ Tail Pitch Slider ]

If you set this to 10mm, you will be with in ½ turn on your pushrod length, if your servo is at 90 degrees. Test fly it to achieve the last final settings..

this isn't too much science.

flip the blades over until they form a V

Through some simple math (left as an exercise to the motivated
reader), you'll find that you want about 1.25" or so between the
blade tips.
