| Right now the A123 cells don't have quite the same energy density as LiPos. Which means for the same amount of power you'll carry a heavier battery. The issue is that current cell size is fairly large and would not be suitable for 300 class heli. There lots of 450 and up helis running the A123 packs. However the cells are still expensive and since they run at a lower voltage, you need to bump your pinion or move to a 4s pack
My guess is that LiPos will still be around for long time in the small helis and park fliers. Its likely that the bigger 500 or 600 class will be the first to migrate in large numbers. A lipo for those is too expensive for it to be practical. This is where the A123s will be much better, charge much faster, be able to be charged many more times, and you don't risk exploding your expensive battery in a crash. |
