mx 400 heli help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been flying helis for 12 years now and have never had any real luck with medium helis like the 400. I test flew my mx400 today and had a unique experience. I have 1.5 degrees negative,6.5 hover and plus 8 top. I have an align 430L (3550 kv) motor and a 10t pinion. I am using a gy240 gyro in rate mode to trim my heli. I set my stunt throttle at 75% all across. I started my spool up with the stick and then hit idle up. The motor ramped up and the heli started to rise with the tail stable. Problem was, at bottom collective the heli continued to rise. I killed idle up and the heli hit the ground on its training gear. I broke the head and a link. The blades were fine. I have the MX450 on the way and I ordered some metal for the head of the 400.

What am I doing wrong? Obviously I need more negative. What Pitch do you hover with this machine? Thanks for the help.

hi skypup
sounds like you have a nice setup :) , it should be a good little flier :)

on most every machine i have flown , with a decent headspeed , hover is around 5 or 6 degrees , i would disconnect the motor and run it though the same start up you tried , it should show you what pitch it was running in idle up , keep us posted , HTH , dana :)

i'm a sport pilot and have a 450 MX , i was able to get it setup with -9 ~ +9 mechanically , and then set the curves to have -5 ~ +9
mine hovers at about 5/8 stick ( around 6 degrees ) and has no problem getting back on the ground before i'm at 1/2 stick

I realized today what I had done. It's so stupid. I programmed the heli in normal mode and since I like to fly with governor I went to the stunt mode and set a flat curve for governor. I totally forgot to set my pitch in stunt mode and was at the default setting! I only broke the mast and a pitch link. I think this model will be fun.

My MX 450 came today and looks beautiful. I ordered a stock set of trex blades and also a carbon fiber set of align blades. I also am getting another motor and pinion so I can keep both helis flying.

I'm a sport flyer too. Can you tell me about the 450 performance? Is it stable in hover?

hi skypup
glad to hear it was just the flight modes , i have been there too

i had been looking at the 450 for a while and seeing it at $150.00 got me to finally jump on , i have it setup with a JGF 450 TH and a CC P-35 , i ran with the recommended futaba servos , and a cheapie heli direct heading lock gyro , i have just been flying it in the backyard but it is very stable , and smooth , i have heard people have had problems with the tail box being sticky , but mine is nice and smooth , and you will want to keep an eye on the two screws that pass through the head and act as pivots for the flybar carrier , mine are holding fine , but again , i have heard others have had them come loose , and i replaced the flybar and paddles with a long T-rex flybar ( 220mm ) and some super light paddles , i am not sure what they were for , i picked them up at the LHS , the stock flybar and paddles were a bit too slow for me , and the stock flybar was not threaded and most of the lighter paddles want a threaded flybar , and the last thing , i got some tail boom servo mounts for the rudder servo , just makes setup a lot easier , all in all i really like it , at the price it is a great deal , i bought a set of carbon frames for $35.00 http://mjpcarbon.com/inc/sdetail/3722 , but i haven't installed them yet , dana

Thanks a lot. Did you need to make a new battery mount or does the stock mount allow for the proper cg? What kind of flight times are you getting?

Thanks

I took a look. I wonder if a 2100 will balance extended forward?

hi
i think a 2100mah will balance with the stock mount , it is just a guess though , i have seen some posts of people using a stock T-rex mount that puts the battery slightly forward and up a bit , i am just running the 1250's because i have them from another model , dana

I'm trying the tail slider on mine and it is terrible. Not smooth at all........very draggy.

*I just spoke with helimax and the tech told me I wouldn't void my warranty if I polished the tail shaft. I did and it is silky smooth now. He mentioned that if you need to remove the boom screws the two without the nuts should be heated to avoid stripping. Those are locktited on quite well. The two opposing screws on the mast head should be double checked for loctie. He also suggested putting the balls on the LEADING edge instead of the trailing edge of the tailrotors for more control authority. Thought I would pass this on.

Your welcome. I ended up changing my mind and ordering a t-rex 450S. For 199 you get the kit, motor, esc and a lipo battery! I am sending my mx450 to tower for a refund. I spoke with heli-max and after spending a lot of time I thought I had things working. I went back to the heli and the tailrotor slider was sticking again. I give up. I should not have to trouble shoot a new heli. I think it's a really neat heli. Copperclad said he never had a problem with his. Anyways, thanks all for the help.

Tower and Helimax have both taken care of me on minor little problems, thats one reason i'm staying with them

I have the mx 400 and no quality problems. Helimax told me to polish the tailshaft on the mx 450 and I spent a long time and it still wasn't satisfactory. I figure the trex will be fine and the parts are cheaper. If it was fine from the get go I would have kept it.
