I bought a HBK2 RTF for indoor flying during the winter, hoping to practice backwards and inverted flight.

Flew one pack in stock configuration then swapped out electronics to work with my DX7 so the heli would feel more connected, faster responding, eliminate any glitching (crowded indoor site), and offer better programming.

I installed a brushless motor, but it is a low KV of 2800, so the headspeed is not super high.

I put in a G90 HH gyro and then a JR 500T gyro with a digital tail servo.

As of now I have an esky brushless motor on order to get the headspeed up via the 3900kv rating.

Here is the big question:

How in the world do I get this thing to smooth out and settle down on the cyclic. This thing is terrible! I will be in a controlled hover and then it will take off to the side, then back, then the other side. In forward flight it will be cruising along then all of the sudden pitch up terribly, or maybe pitch down. I can correct for this, but my other helis never behave like this.

Bottom line, I believe it is the servos that are not centering or holding center very well.

Has anyone else changed out the servos? What do you use and how do your new servos compare?

I may not be qualified to answer your questions as I only do FFF. I am surprised you can get the king in the air with a 2800rpm motor. I think its falling out of the sky I had a 8t pinion on the 300hdx 3800rpm when I was still hovering had the same symptoms (cyclic jerky). I went to a 10t pinion and CNC head setup quite well with a gy240 and you can get hands off hover. Now the pitch up is a thing I noticed with my king but I am blaming it on the CG a bit tailheavy a lot of others have made an angled battery tray in the front of the king to help that.

Soooo.....

Is the unstable cyclic due to a sloppy head and linkages or poor centering servos?

I assume you are still using the stock servos. Did the heli fly NOTICABLY better with the metal upgrades?

Yes, the head speed is low, but I can still fly backwards figure 8's and hover inverted with it. The headspeed is marginal AT BEST!!

the sloppy cyclic is the slow headsppeed I have had no problem with servos I am actually using s75's. It got much more stable with the 10t pinion but but then the plastic head starts to come loose blade tracking is lost. I would say If your doing mild 3D get the headspeed way higher 3900 with a 11t and a metal head of your choice any rex head will fit with minor mods. My flying style will probably never include backward flight so the Esky CNC head was fine but it would have flaws for 3D flying.

Can you please explain this comment?

Soooo, has it ever been crashed? Mine behaves this way when feathering shaft is bent. If not proceed with Tryan's recommendation to test a higher headspeed.

the esky head uses the plastic loops with the flybar and you have to try and adjust both sides for perfection I spent a 1/2 hour getting the flybar perfect. Where a see-saw flybar design would of eliminated this. Its not that it couldn't easily do 3D its just that it makes setup perfection tougher. the Esky headis pretty much an exact copy of the plastic head.

oh but slop on plastic head isnt an issue until you get the headspeed up. you may find the 3900 and a 9t will be a great match for what you want. But that motor wont fit youll be doing a little cutting on the mount.

Which brushless motor is a direct fit (minimal modding) for the King 2? TIA

Actually the 3900 Esky is a direct fit. The HDX 300 is also a direct fit. IT's the 3800 Esky motor that needs Modifying, but sane people shouldn't use the 3800 on the KING.

I believe the 3100 is but you cant really call it a modification just a little shave of plastic for the bigger motors.

Tyler, the Esky servos are not the Best but I have been using them from the start and are still using them, don't blame the servos, something else is going on with your heli.

That's good news. I'm getting ready to order the EK5-0005 40g 3900kv along with the King 2. I'll probably only run a 8 or 9T on it for starters. Does this sound like sanity?

I started with 8t but I was used to a cp pro so I jumped up to 10t on the 3800 and got that response back. I would say go 9t for something in between.

I got a 30amp esc mine will burn longer than yours triple b

Brushless

I just ordered the 005 3900kv 40 gram motor. I have been using a 10amp esc thus far. I might have to move up to a 25 amp esc, but hope to keep things light weight and efficient with a 9T and stock batteries.

I have a HS of 3000 and the stk head and least mine works just fine.

I dont backwards fly yet but do a fair amount of Mild 3D stuff.

I use HS55 servos on the cyclic and a HS65 on the tail.

You might have a link binding somewhere.
