I hit my Gyro/Rate mode switch by accident, never having even flown it for long in Rate Mode yet. Instantly fast Piroutting, not knowing what I did, I drilled it in to avoid getting near the parking lot at our flying field.

I hit the hold, but too late. On the skids HARD...5 second chicken dance............

Raptor 90..my first glow crash, flying 50's since July. My Bad, having a switch programmed that can crash your helicopter. Lesson learned.

The two parking lot photos are of it's maiden 4 weeks ago, at the LHS parking lot, in a snowstorm. Only a hover Checkout.

The Crash happened at our AMA Flying Field.

Boom, driveshaft, flyrod, seesaw w/bearings, mainshaft, fanshroud frame piece, 1 rear frame, 1 landing gear, 1 tail blade grip, 1 main rotor grip, 3 link/rods, antenna tube, aileron servo arm, blades, feathering shaft.

Ouch, but my bad, not dumbthumbs, poor flying, or part failure....

BRAIN FART on a switch that should not have been active. My Bad.

I haven't added it up yet. Not too bad, at least it ain't a re-kit.

You should have set up rudder trim mechanically by adjusting linkage lengths in rate mode, as it is more predictable for the gyro in HH.

Bad luck on the accident, i also did what you did but i was lucky i was high enough to flick back and calm down.
I flew my raptor for several months without using rate mode until one day i flip to rate mode and wondered WTF.
My boom mounted servo was creeping up the boom alittle every flight moving the trim but heading hold didn't show this until i switched to rate mode.

You know it, Bro. I just never did it, you can bet I will next time.

AND, I will disable that switch.

207 bucks for all the bits...baseplate included. Plus 100 bucks for blades........

OUCH. 307 dollar brain fart. Still cheaper than a Giant Scale Plank....I am just glad I did not have the MD500 body on her yet.

IMHO, A 90 size heli can be dangerous in the hands of a new pilot.
I would fly the 50's until you feel more comfortable handling situations like this. It will also save you some money in the long run.

Umm. l don`t see that switching into rate mode would cause a FAST piro. Slow one maybe. lt would be difficult to be far enough out on the push rod length to induce a fast piro and still work ok in heading lock. Could be some of the gyro settings in the tx are wrong in that mode aswell.

Well it was startling, it may not have been blindingly fast, but a good rate, more than I could keep up with for sure.

I never flew it out of safe space, and did what I knew was right, I put it in BEFORE it got anywhere it shouldn't have been.

I was flying with gloves, gloves that I flown everything I own with. Thin on the fore finger and thumb, doubled up around all else. I had hand warmers in as well.

I am totally comfortable flying this machine, it is stable, and I am very confident of my skills. I was flipping and rolling up high before starting my circuits, and was going for the low rate switches when I bumped into rate mode....rate mode that was not mechaniclly right.

My Bad.

I did not notice the Rate mode was on until after the crash.

Otherwise I could have saved it.

At any rate ,(no pun intended) ,it will not happen again.

Not as bad as a Giant Scale Aircraft crash, but you can't glue this one back together, you gotta buy PARTS. LOL.

I love how stable this machine is, but, I hate glow motors. Only because of the mess. I fly almost exclusively gassers in plank mode. Time for a Predator 3D or a Predator Kondor.

I was going to convert this one to a gasser kit in another thread, but the 600+ bucks to do it, is better spent on another bird, IMO.

At 300 bucks to fix this one, no biggie. I have spent that on a good day of any of my other hobbies.

I am pretty proud of the fact that I set this machine up, and it was perfect from the first hover....except for never gettingthe Rate mode right , and turning off the switch.

I was having TOO MUCH FUN.

NOT crashed by RATE MODE.

I have been assembling from the crash, and it was not my Rate/Gyro switch that caused me to start into a piro.

I got bit by the pin in the bottom tail drive gear walking out...it was missing and there were tell-tale rub marks of it spinning, walking, and getting thrown. Drat.

And I go and read about it, and find that a simple .02cent piece of heat shrink could have prevented it. Double rats.

I got bit by a common F-up.

Rats.

AAAAhhhh, you hit the "crash switch" have have deprogrammed that switch on my radio.

Don't feel bad, a couple years ago I accidently hit t-hold while in a hover about 6 feet off the deck. Unfortunately the gyro I had in the bird was a rate gyro and with the sudden loss of torque from the mains the heli pirouetted around about 540 degrees and ended up pointing nose it at me...

It all happened so quick the next thing I remember was the bird lying on her side on the ground. (still facing me)

No major damage other than a bent spindle and broken main blade.

Heli's are one of the few things that actual have the potential of operating better after a crash and rebuild.

I thought I hit the rate mode switch, but, it was the pin launching from the tail drive that sent it in to piro fast mode.
