Vario Sky Fox - Benzin - Evolution - Xtreme > Third Tank on the Benzin Trainer Screws Loosening?

I finally got to burn my 3rd tank the other day. On my 4th tank it did not fly right and had a funny feeling and then heard a flutter/woof noise and landed.

WOW. Lucky I landed, both sides the screws holding the collective pitch arms on the head backed out.

The heli was hovering very smooth, did not see any vibrations at all.

I guess it's my fault for not checking all the screws, but only three tanks and screws are backing out already? Just checked the manual and that screw did not did not said use locktight. It's the machine screw goes into a plastic or a composite block.

On my nitro I check all the screws on the first preflight of the day and fly atleast three tanks without any problems.

How offen do you check all the screws on the gassers? Every flight or everyday?

Are you talking about one that goes through the collective arm into the horn of the blade grip? I've not had those back out on me. I think you could use a little drop of CA on the screw and put it back in. Make sure not to get any on the bearing.

I had to add a small washer in between the to flanged bearings so I could tighten them properly. Without the washer it would lock the bearings.

The screw was on the washout block. I will add locktight on them and watch out not to get them on the bearings.

The one's on the blade grip, as per the instructions shows a washer on it next to the flanged bearings. I will give the heli a once over and preform a preflight check every time from now on .

Yes on the blade grips I use 3 washers. One in between the bearings and one on each outside.

Loctite....

Loctite is not recommended for applications with plastic...
For a screw into a plastic part, med ca will work fine as Cj suggested, but I prefer using "canopy" (airplane builder!!!) glue instead... it is a white glue and it dries clear... just put a bit into the hole or on the threads of the screw and then run it in... when this dries, it will keep the screw tight and not let it back out, but when you are ready to remove the screw, just a little pressure and it is out and no stripped threads... give it a try and you will not have any more problems with screws getting loose or backing out....
Only use loctite on metal to metal...
And I want to see that Benzin flying when I come down in the spring again!!!!!

Good Luck, Stan

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!

Hi Stan!

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!

I'll be there for the Spring FunFly with the heli, but I don't think it'll be painted .

I PM Joe and he states
"Vario has a very high carbon fiber content in the plastic, so i have been locktiting this stuff for a long time with no issues."

"canopy glue" hum sound interesting.

Good Info

Hello Gene,

And a Very Happy New Year to you and yours too.....

That is good to know on the Vario equipment.... thanks for letting me know... I have always noticed a "different" feel/look then most others....
I just got so used to using the canopy glue over the years that it sits right on the table with the loctite....I use it on all my heli's including the "little" electrics and it has always worked well and it will not get into a bearing unless it is forced, and if it does, it is very easy to break loose...

No Paint???? What are you going to do all WINTER???

Come on SPRING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See you then...

Stan

Going to be working on my never ending home improvement project.

I should fire the existing one man contractor, O wait, I'm the existing one man contractor lol. Then I should get a new designer who can make decisions quicker . O wait it's my wife .

O well, maybe I'll get lucky and find some time to paint it during the winter time .
