The protrusions are another antenna. Can't remember specifically. And I think SSMKN2 is right about the others being HF antennas. I only crewed 58C's and we didn't have that antenna.

I like the look of that middle color though it looks a bit light. However, I think that you want to use lighter colors on scale models. I can't remember specifically why this is but feel somewhat sure that I've heard a reasonable explanation at one time or another.

Mark, the explanation goes like this...

If you view a scene, those objects further away have some of their colour washed out due to atmosphere etc. When you build a model, if you want the colours to look like they would appear to you on a full size, you need to slightly wash out the colour so the model looks like a full-size one further away from you.

A simple example.. if you placed a scale model in the foreground so it appears to be the same size as the full-size, its colours will be quite vivid by comparison, even if you actually used paint from the same can..

Similarly, a full gloss shiny finish might look nice, but it won't be realistic if you use the technique above.

That sounds familiar, Tony. Thanks. I did a bit with model RailRooad when younger and did my painting that way but couldn't remember the precise reasons why. I do know how quickly a gloss or even semi-gloss finish will ruin the scale look. Always used flat clears to protect my finishs for that reason.

i have been working on an OH58D. this will be the 5th one built over the span of about 12 years. the first two were built backin the mid 90"s waay before my runryder days and they were both 60 size ships. they were both sold before they were ever finished thanks to Ft. Rucker and its eager pilots who train here. the last one was a 30 size which i used to develop and improve the technique of mounting the mms and a managable 4 bladed rotorhead i pretty much built from available parts from other machines.
this one is a 50 size century fuse with rappy mechs.
unfortunately no one makes a "d" model fuse so you have to get creative to do the "d" conversion yourself. as the last few pics show, it helps to have unlimited access adn or friends who can fly the aircraft to where you work so youcan have at it with a camera.
my buddies Travis and Mac has been a big help with supplying a fullsize Kiowa when i need it.
the plans for the model are to have a detailed cockpit which i never doid on the previous models i built. also a full armament of hellfires and a 50 cal hanging on the left side.
i will post some vids of the test flights so far soon.

Hi Copter Doctor

The photos you posted are great reference, can you post more???

I realy enjoy build photos...

Do you have access to any OH-58A aircraft (flying or not) to take photos... I understand these are pretty old helicopters and there may not be any flying on active service anymore...

Hi Copter Doctor

Thanks for going out of your way to help me... It is good to know that "A" models are still flying...

I searched the internet for photos of other "A" models and have not see any other "A" models with the following skid and foot step configuration... If you happen along one that is similar it would be great...

These steps look like a good way to slip & fall on your butt... Maybe that is why you don't see many???

Thanks

yeah i have only seen a few with these. most guard units or law enforcement agencies that operate the 58A's not only put the high skids on, they also use the flight steps which is basically a bar that goes fromthe front crossmember to the rear.
here is my 58D test flight footage. my cameraman was a garbage bin and i was looking at the screen and the heli simultaneously to make sure it stayed in the shot so please pay no attention to the less than smooth flying.

This is for copter doctor....they typically dont mix 50s with hellfires...too heavy....and when mounting the 50 ONLY goes on the left side, and generally when hellfires are installed they typically go on the right side and a rocket pod is on the left....mainly for the safety of the tail rotor......

Had hardpoints for miniguns on our C's but they'd never let us mount them. They spoil all the fun

Hey kbheli & Copter Doctor

I am going to make a set of tube landing skids like those
'kbheli" poted... Looks like a fun project...

I have read the some folks have made skids from auto fuel line using a fuel line bender...

What are the methods you folks use to secure parts: silver solder or brazing???

For a 60 size what would be the closest fuel line tude diameter???

Jumping into making landing skids...

Anyone with a Funkey 60 size Jet Ranger... Do these measurements seem close:

Skid lenght = 18.75 inches
Skid height = 5 inches
Skid distance between vertical support = 9 inches
Skid vertical angle = 30 degrees
Skid diameter = 3/8 inch

I just got my 60 JetRanger fuse today, and I will probably build the skids first, but I'm a few days away from that, and I'll be doing low skids...

Go to the Bell helicopter website, and download the tech specs for the Ranger. There are 3-views that you should be able to take some measurements from. It's VERY diffucult to interpolate from off-angle photos...

BarracudaHockey uploaded the 3-views in PDF format, but I can't remember which site that was on...

I have it at home, but am at work at the moment.

I stashed them on my web server.

JestRR and CoptorDoctor are the resident experts, I'm merely an able apprentice.

I'd be glad to help however I can though. The last sheet on that PDF has some pretty close numbers for 60 size, they are based on my Kavan Jet Ranger fuselage.

Hey guys...

Thanks for the help... These images will help greatly...

An easy place to determine scale ratio = 1 foot = 1 15/16 inch
