Hello Group,

I have a R50v2 and am contemplating building a Century Jet Ranger or Long Ranger. I've also looked at Century's MD530. I've been doing lots of reading here on RR and am looking for some feed back.

What would be the better build, the Jet Ranger or Long Ranger or MD530 and why? Building tips and what to look out for. Suggested reading besides here on RR.

Thanks, appreciate the input..

Hey Grant: Am in the middle of the 530 right now. Build is going smooth. Fuse is thick enough that cutting is easy with moto tool. So far, got the canopy cut out, fuse openings are all done, except for the exhause opening, and its next.
My new 50 came in yesterday, and am starting to fit things up. Will keep you posted.
My next purchase is the Long Ranger.

Honey, where's the check book, it's Fedex again

I can't tell you about the Jet Rangers, but the MD 530 is a very popular heli. I did a TT for the Raptor 50 and loved it. It's my personal favorite of all helis. I have a buddy with a Century 530E and he likes it as well.. flies smooth and builds up easily.

Hello; Heliproz?... I need to order more parts.

Paint

I believe I've decided on the Jet Long Ranger. I haven't decided on painted or unpainted. If I decide on the unpainted.. Can you guys recommend a good painter? I've had lots of work done by Canopy-FX and have sent Joe an email. Would like to hear what you all have to say.

Thanks

If you need ideas....there are some nice paint schemes in my gallery for Long Rangers. The CHP is one I did a couple years ago on a Funkey 30 size and the Durham Police scheme is one I'll be doing on a Miniature Aircraft fuse I have sitting around.

Grant: Check in at your local body shop. Be surprised what they can do with a canopy, and not charge too much either.

Funkey Jet Long Ranger Unpainted

Does anyone know where I can get the Funkey Long Ranger 50 unpainted? The Singapore hobby shop, who list in stock, doesn't have any.
Any recommendations? Thanks

A torch with MAPP gas, a tubing bender, a bench grinder (i did the first set with a dremel (VERY TEDIOUS), and some silver solder.

The bench grinder is new. Mucho easier.

What tubing bender are you using? I have several for refridgeration tubing but the radius seems too big... I have the bench grinder dremel and silver solder I just need to get the bends the right radius...

I got it at NAPA its make for making brake line.

The first thing I did was go to Bell helicopters web site and downloaded the service manual then I extracted the 3 views and printed them off. I made up a PDF that you can download here that has all 3 optional skid views and a blank that I took out all the measurements so you can make notes on it. http://www.gatewayrc.org/jet_ranger.pdf

Then I used the side views and the fuselage and made some measurements and figured out how big the pieces needed to be. You need to have the fuselage in hand to do this right because even if you have the overall length from the specs they dont always conform to a true scale outline.

Then I bent the struts, brake line is fairly cheap, you can muff a couple of pieces, cut them about an inch longer than you think you need.

I used a drill press and vice and a bubble level to get it perfect but I drilled a hole straight down through the strut where the skid would slide through. You use the next smaller size line for the skid itself and cut it, bend it and stick it through the hole in the two struts. It should be a very tight fit, square everything up and then solder the struts to the skids. Cut off the rest of the overlap and grind the bottom flat (the tedious part when using a dremel)

Add the steps if you're making the high skids by using the smallest diameter line or find something T shaped if you really want it scale.

Fill the ends with body filler or I just used solder.

Then I cleaned the whole thing up with a dremel wire brush, scuffed it with 400 sandpaper primed and painted it.

Then use 400 wetdry paper and medium ca to make the non skid stips.
