Radio - Futaba FASST > 14Mz 2.4Ghz... module based only or possible new native system?

Hi all

I wonder if Futaba is going to release a 2.4Ghz native 14mz system in the near future?

I mean, I've been waiting patiently for the FASST system to come out for our 14mz but everytime I look at the radio, it kinda brakes my heart imagining a 2.4ghz stuck in the backside with a dedicated antenna and a big empty hole on top.

On the other hand, if Futaba does release a native 2.4Ghz 14mz, I'm going to be pissed as I'll end up with a "old" 35mhz 14mz.

A nice alternative, if Futaba indeed releases a native 14mz, would be to offer an "upgrade service" at a price for those who wish to migrate their current systems to 2.4Ghz. I doubt that will ever happen though.

What are your thoughts?

I'm thinking in waiting till June to see if something "native" will appear before going for a module. I have to send my radio in anyway as I need to have the case exchanged but maybe I should wait a little more?

Tony

Tony,

I have exactly the same feelings as you to the "t" on the matter...I hate the uglify it with the module out the back, but I can see the "new" 14mz or equalivent coming out with the 2.4 bult into it, bound to happen. Dosen't look good for us, its either ugly or sell the radio and get a 2.4 14mz ..

If you dont succeed the first time, try and try again. With heli's keep on trying!

Futaba 2.4

From what I have been told and heard (not always accurate), the 12FG is 2.4 out of the box. Too many applications for the 14mz to redo the radio.

Interesting. I just might send my radio in for a cosmetic repair then. I saw the pic on JK site and it doesn't look that bad with the module

TM-14 is now shipping.

You guys have all seen Curtis' radio.... Home Depot pvc pipe on the stick?

What's more important, form or function? I'm sure it will look just fine.

Oh please. Ahestetics also matter... Why are people so hiped up for the Aurora? Mecanically the Stratus achieves the same results, yet it is ugly as hell.

The Vibe 50 is going to hit the market and many will buy it just because of how nice it looks. The 600N looks like a football ready to be kicked in comparison. I know, I own one!

I don't remember ever looking at someones radio and actually caring much about the styling.

Helis is a little different but we did buy the 600N didn't we? I agree it does look like a football but other things mattered more.

Stratus? I have always drooled over MA's big heli styling. I love them.

Aurora is nice, sleek and modern. No doubt one of the prettiest birds out there....cough cough "Here pretty bird, Here pretty bird"

Oh well. I'm convinced for the T14 module. Tower already lists it as in stock so in a few weeks it will appear in europe. Then I only need to wait for the robbe badged version to hit the streets and I'm buying a set. I think I'm going to sell my G3 Rxs in the meanwhile. Still need to asses how much a futaba case exchange will cost me and how much time I will have to be without a radio.

I can see it now:

The Devil Wears Futaba, no,
The Devil Wears JR, no,
The Devil Wears _______ (insert your favorite RC brand here.)

Maybe we get a column in Vogue to cover RC fashion?

I asked about a dedicated 12FG on the Futaba support group at RCU about a month ago. I was told that no dedicated 2.4Ghz 12FG will be released. At one time they did in fact have dedicated prototype systems (pictures were posted on both the 2.4gigahertz.com and tower hobbies website), but apparently they decided to make everything module based in the end.

I prefer a dedicated system not for aesthetic reasons, although that is a consideration, but because I like knowing that all the components were expressly designed for each other and optimized to be that way. Most dedicated systems, no matter what function they preform, usually sacrifice modularity and expandability for performance. But maybe Futaba has solved that somehow. Apparently JR has done so with the non 2.4Ghz-native 12X.

Wishful thinking, but certainly not the reality of the business. R/C on 2.4GHz is not a world-wide standard and it appears some countries all 10mw out while others allow 100mw output. Thus, rather than have several radio types to manufacture and inventory, it's much more logical from a manufacturers perspective to minimize the number of unique systems available. Perhaps someday we'll see the end of module based radios, but it's still several years away at best.

Right now I kinda like the idea of the module. I like my radio, I don't lose a small fortune and the performance for me is more than I need.

I think Futaba did a nice job with the unit. We'll see how well it performs. If it's as good as my current PCM or better I'll be happy cause mines nice and fast now.

If they came out with a screaming dedicated radio and no module I guess I would have to rethink everything. Look at all of the options including brands. I think Futaba knows that. This system keeps a lot of people with Futaba.

No matter what I know I would get off the channel pins sooner or later.

But, that's exactly what JR is doing with the two 12X systems. I know what you're saying, though- it's certainly a greater logistical issue having multiple systems to produce, distribute and service. I'm just very glad JR is releasing a high-end dedicated 2.4GHz unit. Futaba may very well end up doing the same thing down the road.
