Vario Sky Fox - Benzin - Evolution - Xtreme > Gonna bite the bullet and buy!!

Okay folks. After looking at this site for a while and heming and hawing I am 99% ready to buy a Vario Benzin. Now the final decision, the trainer or the high performance Benzin CS? Have flown a shuttle for a year or two and a Nexus for the last two, so I'm assuming stepping up will not be that big a deal, but what say you? About how long does it take to assemble? I assume following the manual and Ray's Authoritative helicopter manual will guide me through with no major surprises.

thanks

Jeff

About 9 hours assembly time.

benzin cs

i thought the cs was the stretched version of josef's ccpm side frames. it was also my understanding that the stretched version was no longer available due to the lack of 800 mm blades.

help me out and let this one eyed ambulance chaser understand what is going on.

thanks

i highly recommend the benzin. mine has been flying for a little over a month and i am purchasing another one to put into a bk 117. it is such a pleasure to fly, that i want to keep this one as a pod & boom.

just make sure you get your order in behind mine. i have a fuselage that is waiting to be flown.

JT:

Wish you were closer to SoCal, I'd build your Benzin for free! I've got 3, and love building them. Everything fits perfectly and is precision machined. Worth every penny. All 3 of mine are standard kits, no CCPM side frames because they'll eventually go in fuselages, and some say those CCPM frames are too tall for some of the fuses Vario offers...

Doesn't really matter which one you get, just get one! You won't regret the purchase!

Thanks Ladies and Gents.

The order will go in on Monday. Now I need to think servo's and gyro's. Opinions?

Jeff

PS plenty of time to build as it is -30 C tonight with a windchill of -43 C

Arrrrrgh!

Are you a JR or Futaba dude? I use JR 8101's on mine in a 3-120 CCPM setup.

"some say those CCPM frames are too tall for some of the fuses Vario offers..."

is this true of the new ccpm side frames that have the servos mounted sideways? i can believe that the old vertical ccpm frames were taller, but it appears that the new ccpm frames are the same height as the standard frames.

anyone know? i'm putting a benzin in a bk 117 at the present time and am having issues with the height of the mechanics and the tail output shaft.

tall frame..

I believe the older version is taller than the current CCPM frame.
just look at the pic below to see the comparison.

Example of Dr. Tim's vertical CCPM frame.

Vertical CCPM servo placement

Look at how much it protruded out from the top of the Huey fuselage.

So the horizontal placement should not have any issue for the example like above.

Nels,

You shouldn't have any issues with the tail output shaft! You can mount the output gear in any of the holes from top to bottom along the side frames and move the gear on the jack shaft to mate with the output gear. You can even swap the position of the gear on the jackshaft to make the tail turn the other way if it's spinning the wrong direction! That's one of the beauties of using the Benzin in scale machines!

Futaba and I'm going with the 3-120 CCPM?

Any thoughts on spare items to order at the same time, what wears quickly or is damaged easily (for my nexus I always have a spare main gear (2 actually) and flybar).

The height of the frames are no longer an issue.

No need to order any spare parts. You won't need them.

mark:

i pulled the tail off my benzin and test fit it in the fuse. i did not have the top cut out to allow it to be put in place. as soon as my new benzin arrives, i will be able to put it in and take it out without issue.

it appeared that the stock mounting position for the tail drive is in the top holes. lowering the tail would be no problem, but it does not appear that it can be raised.

joe howard recommended that i compare the positioning in the fuse with a full scale. i have done that, as well as other finished bk 177s. i believe on of my problems was using the tail boom. i was able to perfectly center it in the tail. however, it the instructions suggest that the tail wire comes out the back of the boom in the middle, but appears to be lower in the front former. i will play with it for a while and hopefully figure it out.

worst case senario. convince the_dave that he owes me a favor!

thanks for the ideas.

Ordered the Benzin CS today with the 4-90 CCPM setup with Futaba 9202 servos and the 502 Gyro. As noted in a previous post there are some problems getting the 71" original blades but I have been assured that the replacements will be as good. Should have it inside of 3 weeks.

thanks for all your input

Well, we all are waiting or at least I am. Have you gotten your benzin yet? I am 95% ready to order and have been watching your post.(Feel I'm walking in your footsteps/shadow)
I'm curious of your opinion, I have built R/C planes for 20 years but, never a heli. After seeing the kit do I build myself (which I enjoy) or do I pay $200. to have it professionally? built.
