Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > JetCopter flew today!!

Man, what an exhilarating feeling!!!! I was shakin' like a leaf on the first flight this morning. It took a few flights for me to settle into it and feel more comfortable.

I'm kind of at a loss for words - it's such a radical departure from the nitro machines.

Wow!!!

Thanks, Rockier.

The only problem now, is Home Depot no longer carries five gallon cans of kerosene. They want $8/gal in single gallons jugs!! It was half that in the five gallon cans.

The search continues...

By the way, connecting the fuel tanks in series is the ONLY way to go if you want to be sure of using all available fuel. It worked great today. Easier to fuel too.

Hi Bill, are you having any lateral CG problems by connecting the tanks in series? I am changing to the new aluminium tanks on my JetCopter and I was considering doing an in series installation. I am wondering if you noticed any radical trim changes in a hover with one tank full and the second empty? Glad to see your enjoying the Heli.

Brg,

Hi Don,

No problem at all with lateral trim change. I think it's that the tanks are so close to the CG, that it's a non-issue. Also, the way I have it plumbed, it draws from the left tank first. Since the CCW rotation leans the heli to the left, that extra fuel weight on the right actually probably helps that situation.

Will sell canopies for jet fuel...

If your having a hard time finding kerosene you could always use diesel fuel. Seriously, check it out.

Also home heating oil will work just as well as diesel.

Kerosene

Hi Bill, The Home Depot in Wyomissing PA has a skid of 5 gallon kerosene.
Maybe your Home Depot can have it transferred.

I don't know if I would run diesel fuel or home heating oil through a turbine; that stuff is not very well filtered and contains lots of nasty stuff. Personally I will stick with the kerosene and go to the Jet A if I have to. Here's another tip, make sure the Jet A comes from the tap, not the sump! The stuff in the sump can be really yuckky also. Personally, I went over a bought a bunch of 5 gallon cans from my Home Depot yesterday. Of course the did look at me funny when they asked what I was going to do with all the kerosene and I told them fill my heli!

Join the club, James!!! It's worth every penny of it....until you crash....

Heck, you can spend half that much on a Fury Extreme. This is WAY more than twice the coolness factor of a Fury! It makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck just listening to that thing fly!

DO IT!!!!!!!!!

Well I took the plunge, I ordered a Jetcopter and can't wait till Thursday when it comes in. Josef at Vario was very helpfull also. I have a Jet-Car and they will be great together but the heli will not fit in it. I live in Dallas and will start looking for fuel. Ron

Welcome aboard, Ron!!!!! Did you get the kit, or the assembled version?

Don't forget to get turbine oil and Powermax while you're searching for kerosene.

Hi Bill.

I am getting the kit. Does Powermax come in different sizes? What is the best oil? The blades are backordered and will back in stock soon. Can't wait. I am now in Chicago at a trade show and it is 9 degrees. Will be going home Wed to warm up!! Ron

Powermax comes in two sizes that I am aware of. You can get a BUNCH of starts off one can of Powermax. I'm guessing at least 40 starts off one large can.

You should talk to Taylor regarding building questions - he did a FIRST CLASS assembly job on mine!

Tell Vario to keep the stock exhaust pipe - believe me, you don't want it. Get one from 'Gassersrule' on this forum.

Aeroshell 500 is a good oil to use.

Have fun,

Number 2 Diesel fuel would not be my choice either. However most home heating oil companies sell "Stove oil" or Number 1 Diesel which is Kerosene with a red dye in it. Harmless stuff would burn just like the Kerosene out of the 5 gallon buckets. Pretty inexpensive if you go to the loading facility to buy it probably around 2.00 a gallon right now.
I drive heating oil truck part time and it is clean. There is not much "junk" to get in the fuel. Might be a bit of moisture if you live in a humid area, but that will be with all fuels.

Kerosene

Hi, I'm in a south suburb of Chicago and some of our local gas stations sell Kerosene. You just pump it just as your pumping gas. Are we the only state who sells kerosene at gas stations? Or is this the wrong type of kerosene to use for turbines or what?

same stuff

Deon: it is K-1 grade Kerosene.......it is fine. Jet-A does have a nicer odor when burning it..........
Let me know when you get yours up and running....

Down here in south Florida several of us get our K-1 kerosene at the gas station about a mile from our field........very convienent. It has been working in many engines for several years now without a problem.
