Which digital servos for the Caliber 5? I'd like to get the brushless one for tail to go with the GY401. What about the others?

I feel like I have to learn all over again.

If you're looking at the futaba brushless, it won't work with the 401. It is designed to work effectively on 601 and 611 futaba gyros. You can also use a BLS 251 on a newer generation gyro like the Spartan DS760.

I have a BLS 251 with 611 gyro on my Cal 5 its an awesome combination, like it alot.

It depends on your budget, the JR 8717 is a good digital servo.
I use three JR9000 in my CCPM setup and 9253 for the throttle servo

I've got the S9254 on the tail, coupled to my GY401, and am using Hitec HS6975HB servos on the swash. They seem to be pretty darn nice servos.

Throttle is handled by a DS821, about the only place I'd put an 821 on a heli. It's actually a bit slow.

Dave,

That's a good combo too, I used to have it on my Cal30.

I also run the 401 with 9254 on the tail. The rest are futaba 3151s and I have no complaints at all with the performance for the price. Although I am ready to step up to a faster stronger servo than the ones I'm using now, the 3151s.

I am using the exact same setup as Heli-cuzz on my C5 and I also have no complaints on the performance either. I am very impressed with the 3151's, I even ordered them for my Caliber 4 that is almost finished.

Cool. I thought about initially using the 3151's because they come with the radio I was gonna get, but I may just go with the 9252's from the get go.

Heliproz has a pretty good price on a three pak of 9252 servos. $69.99/each.

I've used the 5625s when they first came out but they are metal gear servos and developed alot of slop within a few flights. This was in a carbon framed, pretty stiff .60 helicopter so they might last longer in a plastic bird but if I had a choice I would not use them.

Mike

Btw... Turn your caps off. It might be easier for you to type but its really hard to read

I just installed 9252s all around in my new C-5 along with a GY611+9256 for the tail.
It should be nice.

Jfra,
You ask a good question. I too was searching for a median priced digital heli servo but all I could find were cheapys like 3151s and DS821s or the expensive digitals. There is not much in between. Even the better Hitechs are pricy or not available. I ended up finding some good used JR8311s. I would say try to get one of the Karbonite gear Hitechs if you can find one in the price range you want, if you have to buy new.

The other option, is like of the posters above said. Look for a deal on some Futaba 9252s. Sometimes you can find them for around $70. Still a little much but definitely worth it.

RE: Servos

hay Mike you right it's hard to find that midrange servo! If I buy 3 or more of the Fut. 9252's I can get them for $70.00 EA. But were talking an extra $200.00 to upgrade from those JUNK SPK.DS821 why they even put them in the box with such a nice radio is beside me.They need to start slipping a copy of their waring!! in each box that contain the 821's. I called and let them have it so I did my part. So you say look for karbonite gears? double ball bearings? what is 3 pole ferrite bearings type? How bad are the HS 5625 MG @ $54.99? how long will they last in the cal. 5 with the 3 servo 120? I'v gone this far! whats a little further if it falls out of the sky I know I cant blame the equiptment!! thanks for the come back Mike let me if you have any answers to my ?'s thanks again JOE

I hear ya JFERA, family comes first.
Go with the 3151 servos. They're reasonably priced. They served me well and will take you a long way in the learning curve.

Here's a few vids of my Caliber5 with 3151 servos, GY401/9254, RevMax, and the 15 tooth pinion upgrade.

The 9252s are about as good a price for a quality servo as your gonna get. But.... if you can't justify the price then I agree with Heli-cuzz. Consider the 3151. You might want to also look at the 3152. Almost the same speed (about.01 sec slower) but more torque at the same price.

My dad showed up with a Kinetic .50 so we put some 3151s he had in it and they are working fine. I've looped, rolled and flipped it and stuff and he's been pounding it while learning to fly without problem.

I was going to get some 3152s myself before I got the good deal on the used JR8311s.

Better to take your time than to rush. Helis are complex machines and need to be built with care and extra special attention. A poorly built heli will most likely result in a crash.
My mains collectives are set as is:
Normal mode: -4 Low stick/+0 mid stick/+5to+6 3/4 stick/+10 at full.
idle1 -10/0/+10
idle2 -10/0/+10
idle3 -10/0/+10
I run a Revmax so my throttle curves will not help unless you're running the RevMax also.
Linear lines for all modes. No curves! That goes for throttle curves as well.
