Vario Sky Fox - Benzin - Evolution - Xtreme > Vario X-treme/Fury Extreme?

Does anybody fly both the Vario X-treme and the Fury Extreme as I would be interested in an informed evaluation of each and how they compare if indeed there is any comparison between the two. They have each won world championships I think so each must be quality.

Thanks

Really? What world champs? Not doubting your word, just a gap in my knowledge, especially regarding the Vario, you know I have this love/hate thing with my Vario (currently putting the Sky Fox back together)

Hi Dave,

I have tried to find the details as I have read them before but I have had no luck. I am sure I read in Model Helicopter World Mag that a European pilot, I think it may have been Rudiger Veil (spelling) took the Vario X-treme to a world championships in mid to late 90's but then again I may have imagined it . I know for sure that the X-treme was designed for F3C world championships.

I will keep trying to find the article and if I do I will post details for interest sakes.

Anyone know if there is a listing of F3C world champions posted any where on the web?

Thanks

Still hoping someone has flown both helis to give a comparo.

Hi Noel,

I have an interview with Rudiger Feil here that was published in Model Helicopter World November 200, p 52-55. He lists the helis he has flown and does not include Vario, so it must be someone else.

I also have a copy of the vario catalogue '02' which does not mention any competition successes for the X-Treme series (nor for any other Vario heli).

I was under the impression (snippets in various magazine articles) that the X-Treme was designed more for 3D than FAI type flying. If you do get one, I am very keen to know more about it, I would certainly like one myself; I am seriously considering selling my Ergo & Raptors to get one, I would then have only Vario helis and an easy source of spare parts!

I may be wrong

Hi Dave,

I may be wrong about the Vario but I am sure I read something to do with the X-treme and the world champs. Maybe Joe or one of the other Vario reps may be able to help.

As far as the X-treme goes I have had one for about 12 months and although I have not flown it much as I was waiting for my skill level to increase to a level not to risk it, I can tell you that this is a quality machine in all respects and I am sure that you will not be dissapointed if you decide to go this way. The parts quality is extraordinary as usual for Vario gear. I have the Rossi 65 in mine and it runs like clockwork.

I originally got it to put in my Agusta fuse but I am of the opinion that it is to good to hide in a fuse and I will keep it as a everyday flyer and find a Skyfox to go in the fuse.

Hope this helps some.

Noel,

Which of the many version of the X Treme do you have? I keep pawing the catalogue but without some more money, it remains a dream.

Haven't managed to get my Rossi 65 set up yet, very hard to turn it over, only had about 4 or 5 tanks through it.

Dave,

I have the X-treme 'S' left hand rotor rotation as I was going to put it in a fuse thus the left hand rotation.

I saw your earlier posting regarding the Rossi and head shims but as you seemed to be getting the answers I didn't reply. I am running two standard Vario head shims and it seems to be working X-tremely (sorry) well. I use zero nitro fuel.

Have you seen the adds for the X-treme Economic? (also review in Model Helicopter World). From what I have seen this is so close to the standard X-treme it is not funny and I think the main difference is that the Economic does not have the same head as the more expensive versions. It looks like great value.

Cheers

Didn't some guy win the UK 3D masters with an extreme the first year it was held? This was before anyone famous entered it.

Noel - yes, I have the MHW review on the X Treme economic and it is in the catalogue - strong candidate for my next model! And yes, I got the answers I needed about the head shims, I have some on the way from Germany as we speak (type). The standard 'S' that you have also looks very good, that head is very nice!

Vance, I think the first year the 3D masters was run it was won by Clive Cheney with a Bergen, I saw some posts from him here today, so maybe he can clarify that.

Noel, forgot to ask, I am also using zero nitro fuel (nitro is expensive here in Europe, maybe in Oz too?) and i was wondering what oil you are using and in what proportion. I have been using 15% Aerosave.

Since 1993, Ingo Schmitz has won the "Champion of Germany" in their Events. That was for a few years. In 1996, he won first place in Italy in an international 3-D contest. Regretably, in 1999, they found he had cancer, and has since dropped out of the hobby.

Thanks for the information, Joe. Hope that Ingo makes a full recovery and is able to return to the hobby soon.

Dave,

I use a proprietry blend of fuel that has 20% synthetic. I also run a onboard glow driver to help the Rossi through 1/4 throttle as recomended by Joe here on RunRyder.

Cheers

Thanks! I haven't thought of a an on-board glow, I will try without and see how I get on. Hate to add weight and complexity if it can be avoided.

A comparison

I have owned both. I found the Vario to be quite stable in hover and very impressive in normal flight in comparison to the Fury Extreme (YS 80). Although I don't crank sticks yet, I have a couple of fliers here that did, and were impressed with the Vario. One note: it WAS alot more pitchy in FFF, due to the paddles they put on them. This was with a Right hand rotation extreme 3D with vario blades, OS 61 WC RX and vario tuned muffler. I regret letting it go. A nice machine. Besides, lots of Furby's anywhere you go.......when is the last time YOU saw a Vario Extreme out there>>???

Definately on MY "BUY" list. James

Thanks james

I appreciate your feed back.

It's good to hear from someone who has flown both and not just the usual "I own a Furby so it's got to be the best" and you are right as I have not seen another.

All the best.

Well Dave I think the pressure is building

I am very interested in getting an X-Treme at the moment, but the only way to do it is to sell my two non-Vario models, and I am enjoying the Raptor! Hopefully I can shift the Ergo when the winter goes and that will pay for most of an Xtreme and another Rossi 65....

Vario X-treme or Fury Extreme

Ozzy Pilot and Finn Dave, I own two Vario X-tremes and have been very happy with both. I have also flown a couple of the new MA Furys and can make a comparison. First if you want a reliable, maintenence free machine buy a german heli, Vario or Robbe. Second parts are available for Vario almost world wide. I live just outside Toronto Canada and have a dealer on the eastern end of Canada. The only benefit I see in buying a Fury is the machine is lighter by about 1/2 pound ready to go over the other machines and it will accept a big block engine. I have recently ordered a MA Fury for myself and a YS 91 and hope that the new kits have all the bugs worked out(torque tube coming apart and tail hubs breaking). If you decide on buying a Vario let me know as I have just finished installing a YS 80 into one of my X-tremes and changed the gear ratio to 8:42 to 1. I think I will produce a kit to retrofit a few machines for the die hard. If you want pictures E-mail me directly and I will send you some. I have not tested the transplant yet as our weather in Canada has been cold but I will post again when done. By the way the OS60RX and pipe put out good power and will do most 3D moves with ease.
Mike.
PS: check out my sad website and you can see some of the machines at our last funfly, its in my profile.

So far as parts go, for me there is no contest - 2 days from Vario in Germany or 'sometime if you're lucky' if you want X Cell!

(couldn't open your homepage, though)
