Safety - RC Helis are not toys > I nominate this as dangerous vid of the year.

I saw this vid at www.jkheli.com and was floored at the apparent lack of disregard for property and others safety. I was equally floored that when I spoke out about how I felt, how many others laughed and think its a big joke and just no big deal. http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t394518p1/
It was advised that I bring it up here, so here it is. So, how many of you think this is fun, funny and ok? This hobby is dangerous enough and this is brining it to a whole new level of carelesness.

Boring too... after the first minute or so, I only watched it to see what the fuss was about. I know he is hugely skillful and all that, but...

now we have a proper thread for this then i reitterate what i said in the other thread, this is not a good idea and any learners thinking of doing the same PLEASE do not attempt it. go to your local flying site.

i don't care who is flying the heli, a bolt is a bolt and could snap on anyone, the message is not a good one to send out to learners.

cheers

The main danger that counts, is the danger to people. He might do a few $1000 worth of damage to cars, but that can be fixed. If the other thread is correct - he has spotters and the people driving by are friends and the neighbours have all been notified and are OK with it - then it's fine, as far as it goes.

If there is a problem, it's that silly people might try to copy him. But they'd probably do it anyhow.

Better yet let's all drive Nascar racecars on the public streets!

Too many hobbies - not enough money

You know why professional drivers don't race on the streets?

The best pilot in the world still uses servos, electronics, and helis that fail. The argument that the neighbors were told is a joke. Were they also told that their 8 year old kid could die if he runs out to play, or if any windows are left open?(assuming a window will stop a thrown blade) Most people think these things are harmless toys. As for spotters, who was spotting in the backyards that he was flying above? What about a kid turning the corner on his bike at the moment of a failure?
The point is sh1t happens, and it's our responsibility to do our due diligence. If some moron, hobbyist or AP'er, does the same in my neighborhood, I will be calling the cops.

I think it's just the rights turns that concern them......

JK has indeed got skills, but I for one would not like to have to go across the street to my neighbours and ask for the remains of my heli back.

Oh, and, notwithstanding any insurance, how much do truck repairs cost compared to that kind of heli?

Flying around objects and showing off like that is cool....on the flying field!

Did a chapter of Hells Angels ride by at one point in the vid; when Jason took the heli way up and away? Sure I heard a couple of Hardly Movingson motors...

its a prototype or at very best early production model nobody ever gets it right first time.

i seriously doubt he has spotters.

these top pilots should be setting a good example.

How about we throw in push mowers into the fire as well. There is a better chance of flying debris coming out from under a push mower or a lawn tractor and slicing someone open then what we are seeing here.

That was some AWESOME flying. I wish I could fly half that good.

You can tell he is obviously having fun and not putting the smack down with a planned 3D routine.
and hey, he could fly that thing if it slung two mains and a tial... cuz he's JK!!!!!

No, seriously- everyone that is bitching, why not just relinquish all of your freedoms now. Let's just agree to all of the prohibitive laws that are in place to keep all of the people who can't think for themselves safe. Hey, maybe we should close ALL of the flying fields- you never know who will find their way out onto the flightline.
And, honestly, let's ban cars, too. I just love getting bitched out by people who walk out in front of moving traffic. These are the fools you're trying to protect.

I'll bet EVERY neighbor on that street knows him and see's him fly outside regularly. Heck..he's a world PRO for crying out loud. I doubt he'd have been flying if there were kids on their bikes riding around or asking to watch.
He probably edges everyones sidewalks by doing aileron tic-tocs and mows around their mailboxes by hovering inverted.

gian, it's not our freedom...it's yours!.

if an accident happens at a flying field thats been designated as one then-

1. your insurance is sound
2. the cops will have little recourse to hassle you unless neglegent.

if on the other hand someone is hit in a public place then-

1. no insurance will cover it
2. the cops will be all over it as causing the public danger.

it would be good if people forget jk is flying that heli, thats not the point. could be god flying it for all i care, a bolt is a bolt and a blade is a blade and we are trusting all this to a radio link.

this isn't about jk flying, this is about setting a bad example to new comers to this hobby, forget how "cool" it looks for a minute and consider how uncool it would look if a learner decided to try it and threw the friggin thing into a pram.

cheers
