e-Hirobo SRB Quark - Lepton - XRB Coaxial > Lepton tail- Futaba 9650 vs 9257

9650 at 4.8v: 50 oz., .14 sec

9257 at 4.8v: 23 oz., .08 sec

How much torque would a Lepton tail servo need to do mild 3D? According to the specs, the 9257 is almost twice as fast but the 9650 has twice the torque?

Go 9257

The 9257 is an excellent servo, been running the 9650 for about a year now and could never get a no wag tail, installed 9257 and finally a no wag tail(night and day)over the 9650.

Tail generally don't need torque (if the mechanicals are good)
The gyro needs a servo with very quick responses

Hell, JK is using 9257's on the cyclics in the TRex 500's. Proportionally speaking, you're not talking about doing anything more radical than using a 9253 on the t/r on a 90 sized model, which of course works(ed) OK.

I've been running a 9650 on the tail of my Trex 450 and it was ok but it would wag at times with a relatively low gain. It was also not a very consistent pirouette rate.

I JUST switched to the 9257 and it is IMO a world of difference. It holds much better and I was able to increase the gain considerably without wag. It also is much more consistent with the pirouette rate. Also when doing backward rolling circles it really does track nice and holds excellent. It also holds much better when doing tail slides.

You'll like it.

To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

How about running the 9650 @ 6V? That way all the servos can share the same regulator.

I run a full size 9254, fits perfect.

Readyheli sells a mount that is awesome. It brings the servo into the frame. http://www.readyheli.com/Lepton_Ful...bulmer_tail.htm

NICE!!

Hi guys

I had a 9650 on the tail and put the 9257 gears in it.... it is now a 9257 for about $10.

I found a picture on RR somewhere, you only need to change two of the gears. Not the final one, so you don't need to make up a new servo arm.

You can see the difference in servo speed easily. Oh, and it flies much better too...

Regards
Paul

PS, I have it on a GY 401.

So are the motors and circuit boards of the 9650 and 9257 the same? Only the gears are different? If so, why doesn't the 9257 support 6V like the 9650 (at least according to the specs on Futaba's site)?

pwood - If you have more info on changing the gears in the 9650 to the 9257, please post it

Hi guys

Check out 'S9650 with S9257: Truly a lightning !!' in the TT electric section......it took me 30 sec on a search to find it again.
It has a 'nice' picture.

I have no idea if the motor etc are the same on 9650 and 9257. just that the gears fit and that it works well.

then just adjust the arm length to the S9650 similar to S9257.
Longer arm gives you smaller torque and faster speed.
Shorter arm gives you bigger torque and slower speed.

Is it possible that by just extending the arm length on 9650 could get the same result as the above gear change or would that not speed it up enough?

True...... But going with the gear mod the servo will have better resolution for the gyro to play with....... Same effect but you will have one extra benefit going with the gear mod........

I've ordered some gears and will give it a go, eventually I'll go for the 9254 in the frame and 9650's for cyclic maybe. It still lets go a bit on clime outs unless I'm carefully managing the pitch. I'd rather have the tail locked in whatever I'm doing if thats possible.
