| The Paper Clip Mod
This post shows the "details" of the paper clip mod. This mod helps to minimize the damage when you crash your helicopter. The paper clip shears off, allowing the blades to stop rotating while the motor keeps running...
Overview: Replace the stock retaining pin with a 1" section of a #1 paper clip. (Retaining Pin EFLH1135 - part 035 in the BCPP Exploded View)
Materials:Tools:- Pliers - I prefer needle-nose pliers
- Side Cutters
Details:- Remove the stock retaining pin with a pair of pliers. The pin is a press fit and can be removed fairly easily. If you have had a number of crashes, you may need to twist the pin while pulling the pin out.

- Make a new retaining pin by cutting a 1" length of a #1 paper clip and making a 90° bend approximately 1/4" from the end.

- Insert the new retaining pin through the hole in the center hub and main shaft. Bend the straight end of the paper clip approximately 90° to ensure the paper clip will not fall out in flight. Trim off any excess with side cutters.
(Note: the fit is a little loose, but does not affect flight at all)

Repair: - After a crash, the paper clip ends will have sheared off and fallen away from the model. Line up the retaining pin hole in the center hub and main shaft, and use another paper clip to push out the small section of paper clip left in the middle of the shaft. Replace with another section of paper clip.
Warning. Do not pull the center hub off the main shaft until after you remove the sheared paper clip. The paper clip will have little "stubs" that protrude beyond the main shaft and will score the center hub if you pull the center hub off over the paper clip remains.
IMPORTANT: If you have any kind of a blade strike or crash, make sure you replace the paper clip! Trying to fly with a weakened paper clip risks loss of power and possible crash.
