I got one, and based on it, you didn't miss much not getting one. The motor is under powered and eats batteries. The swash is very sloppy in it and it flies like crap. About 1/2 those plastic parts in the head break when you have any kind of blade impact with the boom.

I also have the Heli-Max MX450 with the Align 430XL motor and 35amp ESC that came in my TRex 450SE in it. Even running 325mm blades, It will run twice as long on the same battery as the MX400. The MX450 flies a hole lot better than the 400, the metal parts in the head don't break everytime the blade dings something so I would recommend saving your money and getting the MX450. It might cost you a $50 more plus you have to buy the motor and controller but what for you get in the 400, you would need those anyway.

I converted my MX450 over to the blue Align head and tail assy and took the red head from the 450 and put in the 400. That stopped all the breaking. I going to order the upper frames for a MX450 to convert the 400 to eccpm and order a Micro-Heli swash for the TRex 450SE and use the swash in TRex in the MX450, just because it's blue and will match the rest of the head and put the MX450 swash (which is much tighter than 400's) in the 400. So, all said on done, the MX450 will dang near be a TRex and MX400 will be converted to a MX450 except for the metal bearing blocks, I will also put the longer belt and boom for the 450 on it and a different motor and ESC. Maybe then I will fly like it should.

The only reason I'm doing this to the 400 instead of junking it, is to give it to my granddaughter

Hey 2Slow,
You bought the same 400 Pro I bought. Mine barely resembles
the original. Most people illude the fact that they're really
lack luster, I guess because they start out with them and have
nothing to compare them to. Good riddance. They're no bargain
at $99.

The MX400 Pro setup with the factory recommended equipment is a great helicopter for scale and general sport flying.

I now have two for that purpose and a T-Rex 450 for 3D and acrobatic flying.

Heli-max should starting selling the MX500 in the States soon; I'm sure the MX500 will be the same.

i have 2 of the mx400 pros, stripping one for parts then installing the long carbon fiber boom and the eccpm kit to trick out the other, will keep the spare motor and esc for the stock one and buy an upgraded motor and esc for the tricked one, i just hope it works ok

Other than the plastic head, the eccpm should make it better. With the plastic head, I never could get the blades to track properly on my 400. Plus, everytime it crashed, it would break half the parts in the head and that dinky plastic slider on the tail rotor. I've got a MX450 that flew pretty good as it was. If I had bought the MX400 first, I would have never bought the MX450 for fear of it being like the 400. I bought the 400 fairly cheap on clearance just to have something to fly over a three day weekend and was needing parts for my 450 and Kinetic 50 nitro.

I have since put an Align metal head and tail on my MX450 and the metal head off the 450 on the 400, which helped it bunches, now I'm going to order the parts to change the 400 to a 450 and put a bigger motor in it. The motor in them sucks, loose so much power because of heat, they run a battery down in half the time. With the Align 430XL motor and the Align 35 amp controller in my MX450, 2200 mAh batteries seem to last forever.

Dam, after reading this, other than the frame, my MX450 is a TRex 450. I did this because the Trex parts are normally a lot cheaper than Heli-Max parts and other than the main gear, belt and frame, I don't think there's a part on mine I can get from Align. Making it a lot easier and as I said, cheaper. Oh, and also I already had the Align parts so I didn't go out and pay no rediculous price for them to convert it.

thats what was strange with my 400 pro, the first one came in with an alum. center hub and seesaw, and the second one came in with plastic[still had the alum swash on both] i contacted tower about it, it even said metal hub and seesaw in tech description,[since then they have changed description] they told me helimax made changes without letting Tower hobbies know about, but Tower sent me the upgraded alum. parts free for cust. goodwill. Tower hobbies has been great with me

My experiance w/ MX400 Pro...

That's completely opposite what I received. Back in early '06 I purchased the MX400 Pro from Tower and it was outfitted with the plastic center hub, a very wobbly hub at that. Rumor went that the hubs were breaking if high head speeds were run (over 2500RPM) even though I had mine up around 2800 for a while. A heat gun took care of the initial wobble in the molded part.

Then a little later in '06 a friend purchases a Pro and his has the plain-finished aluminum hub! Clearly ARK knew of the problem and upgraded all the then-current models. I purchased the red aluminum head for mine as a safety measure.

When I discovered the $99 deal in Tower a few weeks ago, I snapped up a fresh 400 Pro and it came complete with the natural color aluminum head.

If there were any plastic hubbed Pros sent out recently I'd suspect that a batch of old stock was uncovered somewhere. It would be interesting to know.

By the way, my original 400 Pro is still mostly stock except for adding a bunch of other metal parts to the head, nothing that clearly affected the flying quality. The most important mod is the extended bolts on the tail blades to remove the loads on the tail servo. Look in my gallery for more info.

I like the way it flys. It's predictable and handles well and no, it's not my only 400 class heli. My only real complaint is its sensitivity to main blades and the blades' chordwise center of gravity. If I use the currently provided replacement Heli-Max solid wood blades, the tracking is impossible to set and a boom strike is just around the next flip. The really light-weight wood blades with the cut-out center are perfect but no longer readily available A good alternative but higher cost are the 280mm Hyperion carbon blades quite often on sale at Helidirect. Being all black makes visibility a problem but florescent trim tape on the tips is the cure.

Dear Headcase,
That's the simplest, inexpense fix I've seen for the
400Pro tail. It should very well work with an inexpensive,
frame mounted, tail servo and the cheesy music wire push
rod. I can see were you would need more counter weight on
the inside since it takes more force to overcome the rotor
torque. Wish I had it to do over again.
