Darren i am using on my hotcat a Quick U Raptor 90 head, which is allmetal.

T/he vario ones are part number 76/10 which are the grips i have on my Acrobatic turbine conversion, but if you have a large model for large blades i dont think these will be suitable for any size bigger than the 810mm.

i know there is someone who is at present desinging a set of blade grips for the large XLV 2.5 meter set of blades, this will help as vario only say a head speed of 850-950, where as with metal grips putting the head speed up to 1000 will really give it added stability.

Matt, please fill me in on metal grips for the XLV. I want a set or two...I.E the will need three, ugh. Is there a list to get on? What about a link?

Also, I read the rpm range a little lower for stock. 800-850 max according to an e-mail from Vario. Although mine felt really nice at 860.

Since your original question included grips from elsewhere, i got mine from air star for $70.... the whole kit. They are nicely machined and finished.

Here they are installed on my Acrobatic..

CJ, When will they be available and how soon can I order 5 of them. Two for the R-22 head and three for the turb head. Got both and soon to be using both. Also, what about different colors? Say maybe... blue, red, polished metal, etc.

Mike, those are nice too but I prefer the look of CJ's grips. I'm sure they are both overkill though and that's just about right in my book.

These grips are beefed up but will the blade axle in the R-22 head handle 1000 rpm with a 2.5 meter rotor? How will 1000 rpm affect the three blade 2.5m turb head that doesn't use an axle? What happens to blade/swashplate timing when the rotor speeds up?

CJ's do look very nice and have more of a scale look.

additional info on asi grips

The blade aperture on the vario is ~14 mm and the ASI is 17mm. Both look great, however, you will need to use additional spacers on the ASI with the 421's. ASI is much cheaper and can't really tell the diff. Also available in all nickel Bolt size on the ASI is 5mm instead of 4 which should improve the loading margin.

DK,

I run my XLV with these grips at a headspeed of 1000 rpm with the stock Vario blades. It flies beautifully. The head rubbers must be kept tight, so if you have the occasional blade flutter, add shimms to pinch the O rings more. They are all black on this first batch of 50.

I ordered three to try first. I will worry about the R-22 head later. BTW, I can't get enough of the XLV. It isn't aerobatic but it is a blast to fly anyway. Almost as much adrenaline as flying aerobatics.

Blade flutter sounds like serious "PUCKER FACTOR". Is there a shim kit to install prior to experiencing this heart stopping, pooping, mind freak? Has this caused a crash yet?

Well, I put an hour on them and they worked great but I did have one issue. These are cut a little deeper on the blade bolt/nut recesses and I bottomed out on the shank before the holders could compress to grip the blades enough to control lead/lag. I ended up putting a small piece of tape on one side of the blade root to add some friction which worked. The proper way is to add a washer/shim to the blade bolt or nut to get a little more compression. This is what I plan to do. Overall, these blade holders are real nice and I love them. Good job HobbyParts.

DK,
another option would be to run a M6 die nut down to the end of the threads on the bolt, then add another half turn. Glad you like them.

D we have seen the same thing even with the stock grips. There is a little variance in the bolts some of the shanks are a little longer. We just selected aftermarket grade 12 bolts and no problem. Craig

Thanks guys. I did the die nut trick and it worked great. Todays flight began with a fresh gallon, the third to be exact. My needles are at 1.5 turns out each. I did the last two tanks on the ground as the old breakin oil gets expelled from the system. It's almost a gummy feel and is black. It's getting clearer as it builds up on the tail boom support. Just as Toxic Al explained it would. Anyway, todays flight seemed to have more power than before and the engine was a lot smoother. I guess it's finally settling in....
